Richard Tenneson a Korean War defector from Alden Minnesota arrived in Seattle aboard Northwest Orient Airlines saying he has come home as an American and not a Communist. He seeks to reconsider his stance on the war and germ warfare claims while hoping to resume farming in Minnesota with his family.
It is estimated that 71 percent of all American families now own automobiles, with 12 percent of car owning families having more than one car.
Marion S. George a 12 year member and former president of the Washington Independent school district board of education has resigned at the December meeting. He becomes cashier of Rubio Savings Bank of Brighton and cites business travel as hindering ongoing public service. Replacement will be named at January meeting to serve until March 1956 with full election in March. George joined the board in March 1944 and has been a charter member of the Iowa Association of School Boards.
One hundred Washington county residents organized a county wide Accident Prevention Group at the courthouse gathering Thursday evening. Fred Geasler named president with Rev Harley Gelhaus as secretary treasurer and Sheriff Charles Snyder offering office facilities to aid the effort. The program stressed preventing accidents over prosecutions and volunteers received reporting cards to track traffic violations and issue warnings before fatal incidents.

Washington's Community Chest fails to hit its $24,500 target for the first time in its history. About $900 remains to be raised with no further solicitations authorized, though officials hope voluntary contributions will cover the deficit. The Chamber of Commerce designates three evenings next week as Open Town nights inviting residents from the area to view festive decorations in Washington. Iowa's annual traffic deaths rose to 597 with four more fatalities reported Thursday, narrowing the gap to the all time record of 612. The victims include 24 year old Jack Simmons near Council Bluffs, 50 year old Grant Metcalf and his wife Wilma near Sioux City, 64 year old Arthur Brodale and relatives near Ottosen, 17 year old Carroll High senior Jack Conley near Carroll, and others in separate crashes. Police details note high casualty pace with 15 days left in the year and a fatality rate of about 1.68 per day.
The Marine Corps League Golden Gloves tournament date moved from January 26 to January 25 in Washington. The event will be at the armory building with entry blanks at Beye's Shoe Repair shop. Entries should be filed soon to schedule an entrants meeting on AAU rules.

Harland M. Grunder and Ralph E. Marshall trading as Scott Furniture Co. of Wa lo wa filed suit in Muscatine District Court to restrain Harold C. Miller from operating a furniture store within 50 miles of Washington until Jan 8 1959. After court evidence Miller agreed to an out of court settlement and the case was dismissed.

Washington Methodist church receives 1000 dollars and Pleasant Hill Christian church 500 dollars. The Woman's Society of Christian Service of the local Methodist church and the Washington Order of Eastern Star chapter get 100 dollars each.
