The public affairs committee and local groups released a two phase Rate Your Town survey. It found Washington’s volunteer fire department holds six paid drills annually with chief Maynard L. Brown as instructor. 28 volunteers plus on duty personnel respond to calls.
Mrs. John Bieri and her sister Rita Walfer from Lucerne Switzerland provided the program for the Washington Kiwanis club meeting. The pair sang German Swiss Christmas songs with accordion accompaniment. Dr L B Eicher was in charge of the program.
Victor S. Martin, 26, Ottumwa, was sentenced to 50 years at Fort Madison for the strangulation slaying of 60-year-old Michael Allen near Ottumwa. A Korean War veteran, he waived delay and faced the verdict after a night of jury deliberation.

Funeral services for Myrtle Pearson 78 will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Jones funeral home with Dr. William J. Grossheim and Rev. Milan Thompson in charge. A native of Washington county she died Wednesday at 1 30 p.m. in a hospital. She was born July 18 1876 in Washington county, daughter of Abram and Julia Applegate Pearson. She lived on a farm, retired here, and moved to Washington with her brother N C Pearson. Survivors include sister Mrs Anna Brown and brothers Nate C and Frank Pearson, burial in Elm Grove cemetery.

One person was killed and nine injured in 54 Iowa traffic accidents on Safe Driving Day. Eldrin Bakken, 24, of Northwood, died when his car left an icy curve on Iowa 105 seven miles west of Northwood. Fellow occupant William Wolff, 24, was injured. both were ejected.
