Washington County Adds 18 Men to CWA Labor Ranks

Washington county will add 18 men to Civil Works Administration projects next Tuesday. Selected by the county relief committee from relief rolls and re employment list, they join Grace Hill quarry No 1 crew raising total at the plant from 52 to 70. Overall county CWA workers will total 345 with crews at Bailey farm quarry Grace Hill quarry No 2 Guy place quarry and primary roads under the highway commission. There are 12 women employed on various CWA projects in the county.

Oskaloosa Giants Rout Washington Demons 42 to 20

Floyd De Heer at 6 feet 7 inches led Oskaloosa with 13 field baskets as the Giants overwhelmed the Washington Demons. Leeper added three early baskets for Washington but the Demons could not overcome the fast start, trailing 13-1 after the first period and 27-10 at halftime.

Roscoe Turner Performs in Phoenix Benefit Stage Show

Moore to Serve at Reformatory After Knife Charge

John R. Moore was arraigned in district court and sentenced by Judge W. Hamilton to up to two years in the Angamosa state reformatory after pleading guilty to carrying a concealed large saw edged knife. The December 1933 charge stemmed from being armed with a dangerous weapon. The judge cited Moore's failure to reform after a 30 day county jail term and adjourned the November term.

Success of Act Proved In Half Year

Washington reports the NRA marked six months as a compact, ready organization. The administration sees the National Recovery Act as workable and capable of lifting the country from low mood with enforcement of codes to follow. Judge Dewey Heads Bethlehem Knights Templar Commandery

Judge Charles A. Dewey elected eminent commander of Bethlehem commandery Knights Templar at the annual officers election held in the Masonic temple last night. Other officers named include L A Jones generatissime Zear Hinshaw captain general George McDaniel treasurer AW Yard recorder Clover Gault senior warden Brookhart junior warden and Dr Fr Witaigman prelate. Dewey remains a Bethlehem member after moving to Des Moines for a federal judgeship and may later become grand commander if his duties allow. Installation set for January 19 with a dinner and large attendance expected.

Sioux City Cigar Store Bomb Victim Incident

Two men threw a bomb into the George Myers cigar store in Sioux City early today causing a loud explosion that alarmed 35 hotel patrons in the building above. No injuries were reported. Police blame rival gambling factions for the attack. Myers had previously been shot at his car in a separate incident.

New Duties for County Agent Highlight Farm Recovery Work

The 1933 annual report shows county agent duties shifting from direct personal aid to training local leaders and sustaining programs. Office visits reached 8 261 with 2 022 in the second quarter and 2 261 in the last quarter, plus 2 498 calls and extensive mail outreach. The Farm Bureau notes growing interest in 4-H and women’s projects, plus events like the Girls 4-H rally and the Corn Husking contest drawing large crowds.

Federation Officers Named At Washington County Meeting

Emmett Hayes of Washington township was re elected president of the Washington county farm bureau federation at the annual meeting held today at the United Presbyterian church. IL H Rinner of Crawford was elected vice president A L Duensing of Jackson secretary and Earl Smith of Cedar treasurer. Presidents of township bureaus will become directors of the federation.

Washington county farm bureau approves hog program coop proposal

A resolution passed at the Washington county farm bureau convention urges Iowa farmers to form non stock cooperatives for meat processing. It calls on the United States government to finance and operate plants for processing, financing construction, equipment, and maintenance through its programs.

The county home project committee elected Mrs. Homer Birney of Jackson as chairman. A farm bureau dinner drew 230 attendees, one of the largest on record. Royal Hidbrook of Ames prepared to deliver the afternoon address as Jean and Helen Stewart of Crawfordsville shopped.

Col and Mrs Charles A Lindbergh landed in Miami this afternoon aboard their monoplane returning from an unprecedented Atlantic flight that covered 25 000 miles and visited 19 countries. Thousands crowded the landing barge to greet them.
