Gov elect Norman A. Erbe questioned a proposed 1961 63 increase in state school aid as he heard the next state superintendent Paul Johnson present a 55.54 million dollar annual budget for each year. Johnson urged directing much of the increase into a need based supplemental fund while Erbe called for budget trimming and a solid plan to share costs with local districts.

Plans were made for union services in January with a men’s prayer breakfast at the YMCA on January 5 at 7 am and a women’s prayer meeting at 10 am. Elgin named Holy Week committee chairman. The meeting was at the home of Rev and Mrs Lloyd Latta. next gathering set for Friday Dec 23 at 7 am with county attorney elect Ira Morrison as guest.

Opera Written at SUI Will Be Seen on TV
Iowans can watch a new opera titled Golden Child on NBC TV Friday night as part of Hallmark Christmas Playhouse. Written at the State University of Iowa by Poet Paul Engle and music professor Philip Bezanson, it runs 99 minutes and was first staged at the 1959 Fine Arts Festival at SUI.
Post Office to Stay Open All Saturday for Christmas Rush
Washington post office windows will be open Saturday afternoon December 17 from 8 30 a m to 5 p m as postal workers prepare for the final Christmas Eve mail drive. Postmaster O J Brown expresses thanks for cooperation on early mail campaign. Local deliveries still possible but Christmas cards should be sent by first class mail with return addresses on cards and package labels.

Wesley B. Webster Dies at 76 in Wellman
Wesley Blaine Webster, 76, died at his Wellman home after years of ill health. Born August 15, 1884 in Johnson County, he was a retired farmer who moved to Wellman 17 years ago and served as justice of the peace. Surviving are his wife Emma, two sisters Josie Yoder and Laura Crow, and brother Charles Webster.
