Lew King aged 15 died at Ottumwa hospital after a coasting accident. He was injured when a sled struck a bare spot in the pavement. Darrell Franklin was sledding at the time. A steel runner pierced the victim’s nose. Surviving are his mother Mrs. Cecil King and several brothers and sisters.
Navy Secretary Knox told reporters the Pacific fleet lost Arizona, three destroyers and two smaller craft on December 7. He cited 3,385 casualties in Hawaii, with 2,729 dead and 656 wounded. He said the rest of the fleet remains at sea and that a formal investigation will begin.
A 16 month old boy, Dwayne Stukey, is in critical condition at Broadlawns General Hospital after swallowing kerosene from a can used to start a fire. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Herbert Stukey who live northwest of Pleasantville. The child lifted the can to his mouth and swallowed a quantity before his mother knocked it away.
Dr H O Green 71 longtime Spencer physician dies at home after months of illness. Survived by wife and son Joseph an attorney in Chicago. The Greens deeded the Casino and grounds on West Okoboji lake to LaSalette missionaries, who remodeled it into a priest prep school now opened.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Salveson of Sioux Rapids await word about their son Edgar, 2, stationed on Midway Island with the United States Geodetic Survey, amid reports of the siege and limited communication.
CORNING The high school building was broken into here and approximately $50 taken from the vault. Janitor Horace Patti son discovered the crime. Damage to the vault probably will be more than the value of the money taken.
Burlington plant resumes normal operations within three weeks as an army board probes the explosion. Seven workers remain missing with six bodies recovered and identified. In Des Moines, police alert officers to watch for Dwight Strawhacker believed missing and shell shocked after the blast.

The Washington National Bank in Washington Iowa declares a five percent dividend on certificates of participation payable Tuesday December 16 1941 during banking hours. Checks are available at the bank tomorrow morning. The fifth dividend totals 16450 dollars, part of a cumulative 150000 dollars distributed from four prior ten percent dividends. Certificate holders are asked to bring certificates for proper encirclement.
Mrs Merle Twinam and Mrs Howard Anderson of Crawfordsville plus Mrs Eleanor McKee of Ames join others in Mt Pleasant for a training school ahead of a Farm the Music festival set for April 29. Iowa Wesleyan College chapel hosts the event with Fannie Buchanan in charge as state music chairman. Washington county is among 11 southeastern counties taking part with a women’s chorus of about 100 voices. About 90 women from southeastern Iowa attended the Saturday session at Mt Pleasant high school.

The House Naval Affairs Committee approved legislation to add 150000 tons to the U. S. Navy, well short of the navy’s 900000 ton request for a 30 percent expansion. Rep. James W. Mott of Oregon said current shipbuilding capacity limited the increase in 1942.
A 42 voice First Methodist choir under Elouise Sorden performed The Babe of Bethlehem by Hamblen with organist Hannah Klein and soloists including Miss Rice and Mrs Sorden. A separate First Presbyterian choir offered a Christmas program with Iola Dittmer Mrs Bond and others, plus a four o clock Christmas vesper.
County 4-H enrollment meetings announced by club agent Harrison Donald. Crawfordsville leaders invite all boys and parents to meet at 11 tomorrow at the high school to discuss baby beef enrollment and club organization. West Chester boys also meet Thursday at 11 at the high school with Mr Donald attending.
Funeral services for Henry G. Behr were conducted yesterday at 2 PM at Jones Funeral Home with Dr. R. C. Keagy of the Methodist church presiding. Interment followed in Elm Grove Cemetery. pallbearers included Russell and Ro.

London reporting for the National Broadcasting company says British radio is employing a seven tick cue in its transmission to Germany. After the seven ticks a voice asks who among the listener’s family might be targeted, claiming every seven seconds a German dies in Russia.
Berlin dispatch reports a severe typhus outbreak in German occupied Poland White Russia and the Baltic regions leading to school closures in occupied Ukraine. The epidemic also affects German troops around Leningrad.
