Ainsworth residents will greet Santa Claus as he visits Front Street on Saturday December 16 at 1 p.m. The annual pre Christmas visit includes time to meet youngsters and distribution of treats.
Ralph Prybil, a Johnson County Supervisor, asks the county to pay 2500 in legal costs after his acquittal on gift law charges. He also seeks 872 for himself and colleagues Ed Kessler and Robert Burns after their open meetings law acquittals in municipal court last year.
State Representative Keith Dunton of Washington and Keokuk Counties met with the Washington Community School Board of Education to explain pending school legislation and its impact on local schools. He cited H654 property tax relief proposals and his role on the budget review committee.
Des Moines officials said the fuel shortage is nearing an end while warning ongoing work is needed for winter. The attorney general’s office opened an antitrust inquiry into whether major oil firms are restraining supply to Iowa independent firms to ease the shortage.
A basement apartment fire at the Rowedenda Apartment complex in Des Moines gutted a unit, sending about 50 residents fleeing in subzero temperatures as firefighters fought the pre dawn blaze. The complex is owned by Warren Rowe of Des Moines. In Iowa City the Sigma Phi fraternity house lounge fire prompted about 25 men to relocate to other university housing.
The State Board of Regents urged Gov. Ray to back a $248.4 million 1973 75 biennial budget, claiming it would fund a $378.4 million total and largely prevent tuition increases. Most funding targets faculty raises and new campus buildings, with two thirds from state appropriation and one third from tuition and fees.
Prosecution resumes calling witnesses in the Orville Lee embezzlement case. Iowa trooper Hugh Hardin state conservation officer Dennis Phillips and gun shop owner Russell Sheckler testified, with Lt. Jerry Barnes ordered to bring Hardin's daily reports and related records Friday.
Des Moines reports the Terrace Hill Planning Commission aims to raise about 350000 to remodel the mid Victorian mansion into the governor’s residence. About 110000 was raised in the last 10 days, with 200000 more expected to fund a public museum and repairs planned this spring.

University of Iowa assistant professor Dr. Raymond S. Oshiro uses hypnosis in his dental curriculum to relax patients and reduce fear. He says 95 percent can be relaxed, potentially reducing the need for full anesthesia by 25 to 50 percent, while maintaining reflexes for coughing and swallowing.
