Christmas Lives On in Eastern European Christmas Traditions
Across Hungary Czechoslovakia and Romania official efforts to replace Christmas with new customs have largely failed. Families still celebrate with fir trees carols and traditional meals as Christmas remains a strong religious and cultural festival amid Communist influence. In Hungary Christmas Eve is family time with carp dinner and limited public activity while Boxing Day and Christmas Day are holidays. Romania preserves the Christ Child home visits and Father Frost in schools, while Orthodox observance remains central.

Sam Fry Delivers Genius Slam In 1954 Summer National
In Washington, Sam Fry Jr playing with Harry Fishbein in the 1954 Summer National Championship used a cautious two diamond open and a strategic heart finesse to secure a slam. A sequence of precise plays including ruffing a diamond jack and controlled trump management let Fry overcome East’s assumed ace of spades.
