New President to Lead Iowa's Fifteenth Chief Executive

The University of Iowa will inaugurate a successor to President Walter A. Jessup next year as its fifteenth chief. Jessup, who accepted the presidency of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, served 18 years, equal to the combined terms of his four immediate predecessors. The historic record shows an average tenure of about 5.5 years. Amos Dean, the first president in 1855, conducted duties by mail from Albany and made only three trips during his four-year term. He would accept only $500 for his services.
