News reports detail a massive blizzard sweeping 14 eastern states with temperatures down to single digits. Death toll rises to 187 from heart attacks during shoveling and mass disruption hits roads, airports, schools, and services from Virginia to Maine.
Delegates at the American Farm Bureau Federation gathering in Denver consider a farm program as an alternative to the Democratic plank. The plan would largely expand land retirement for surplus crops and allow farmers to reject government price supports. Proposals call for ending wheat acreage allotments, extending the sugar act five years, and extending the wool act two years to boost domestic production.
Afro-Asian delegates urge United Nations action in Algeria as Algerian rebel leaders press for urgent measures to end violence in Algiers and Oran. A draft resolution seeks independence rights and a referendum, while Congo force withdrawals by Guinea and Morocco raise concern over UN operations.
Ed Knotek of Washington county joined 67 other travelers on a 12 day trip to Hawaii arranged with Tait Cummins of Cedar Rapids. The group flew from Seattle aboard Northwest Orient aircraft to visit Waikiki Beach Pearl Harbor and notable sites including the Mormon Temple the royal palace Punch Bowl crater and the University of Hawaii. Knotek photographed island scenes and volcanic activity and returned December 2.
Dr and Mrs R E Taylor held the lead with a net 10 210 points after the fourth round of the U s Men's Bridge marathon. Top scorers list includes P L Fenn and Clint Stewart 8720 and John Phieger with 7940.
Gov Norman A Erbe opened budget hearings criticizing overlapping duties among state departments. He urged centralized purchasing and a single inspection agency to save money, while seeking to hold total annual appropriations near $171 million. The Commerce Commission and Executive Council requests rose, with the Iowa Commission for the Blind seeking funds to leverage additional federal dollars.
Elizabeth C. Schnoebelen 85 a Riverside native died in Mercy Hospital Iowa City. Born June 15 1875 she married Victor A Schnoebelen in 1896 and farmed locally. The Marion Avenue United Presbyterian Church youth present The Birth of a King Sunday at 7 p.m. in the chapel. Seventeen youths perform with music woven in, directed by Dr. Vernon Elgin and sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Chabel with help from Mr. and Mrs. Duane Shalla.
A Story County court upheld the will of William E. Hawks of Cambridge directing $288 413 to the Iowa Public School Fund for vocal music instruction and lung development for young children kindergarten through second grade. Three challengers’ petitions were denied though their relation to Hawks was not specified. Hawks died by his own hand January 10 1959 at age 86.
AFL-CIO President George Meany met with President-elect Kennedy amid cabinet planning. Meany gave little public comment on discussions with Kennedy, who weighs a labor secretary pick while naming other top posts.
Rioting flared anew in Oran with about two thousand European youths attempting to invade the Arab Casbah and clashing with police. De Gaulle, en route to Paris, vowed drastic punishment for riot leaders as the FAF called off a citywide general strike. In Algiers, calm returned while a court, reviewing Friday’s violence, heard autopsies showing multiple causes of death among the dead.
Iowa faces an intolerable one third of its primary highways and a 20 year program costing about 5.6 billion dollars to modernize. The PAS and ASF studies urge major funding changes, a 280 million dollar yearly outlay, a 312 million bond issue, and a shift of road funds toward cities and counties while trimming the farm to market network. An 8000 to 9400 mile primary system is proposed with county takeover of lesser roads and a county trunk road focus, plus a streamlined highway commission and policy leadership.
A class of 11 new members was enrolled in the Washington Moose Lodge Sunday afternoon. The event honored D D Lewiston the Moose state civic affairs chairman. The Burlington ritual staff and Perry state champion quartet led the ceremony with a floor show by Matt White's troupe. Pilgrim Milo Navy and Milo Wynn of Iowa City joined as out of town guests.
Washington stores will stay open every evening Monday through Friday next week. On Saturday December 24 Christmas Eve they close at their usual weekday hour. Shoppers may visit during usual hours this week and daytime or evening December 19 through 23.
Mrs. Franklin Sojka was named chairman of the Washington County Health Improvement Board at the annual meeting replacing retiring chairwoman Mrs. J. H. Jones. Mrs. W. M. Tweeten was named secretary and treasurer. Thirteen attended the luncheon and meeting at Winga's Cafe with regional reps Ray Tollman and Robert Stevenson. Norman Jensen, hospital administrator, met with the board as Tolman outlined regulations and the group voted bylaw changes to set definite terms of service for officers and members.
Robert Rhea, a former Washington man and first manager of a Berteco Store here, died Sunday at 3 30 p m in Sigourney Hospital. Survivors include his wife one son Lawrence three grandchildren four brothers and two sisters.
Rainbow Girls announce their annual holiday dance on December 27 at the Washington armory from 9 p m to midnight with Carole Jungbluth as chair. Invitations are being sent and the theme is Frosty Mist. Dale Connelly and Mrs Dwane Shalla assist with arrangements and refreshments will be served at intermission.
