Special dispatches report the presidential party departing Washington by two this afternoon for a southern tour. News notes Lafayette monument plans in Paris with a site granted on government ground and funds raised toward sculptures. Also updates on Admiral Dewey’s health and Manila troop movements amid ongoing war coverage.
Calvin Fisher of Wabash County says his son Eli was publicly hanged by vigilantes in Montana after being mistaken for a criminal. The elder Fisher, a former schoolteacher, had aided in a ranch raid under duress and then learned three men were killed during the attack. He travels west to seek his son's remains and justice.
In Huntsville Alabama on December 13 Henry Nelligan and George Beverly both from First Florida G Company died after a dispute. Nelligan stabbed Beverly then was shot by Nelligan's brother. Beverly's brother saw him fall as another soldier shot the cook. Porter Weisnant of Tenth Cavalry wounded in throat reports a hold up by two white soldiers before being shot.
General Grosvenor traveled 660 miles to dine with thirteen guests after a election bet by Tom J. Keating that Charles Kinney would lose. Kinney won by over 60,000 votes and Grosvenor joined the party in Columbus Ohio to celebrate the winnings.
Anti-Dreyfus mobs in Paris protested the court of cassation and Colonel Picquart with troops on alert. Comte de Pamel urged strength against perceived justice, while MPs Millevoye and Ramel prepared protests in the chamber.
Samuel Gompers at the Federation of Labor convention warns against annexation post Spanish defeat. He cites Cuban independence as essential and condemns annexing Hawaii and Puerto Rico, urging restraint as the United States faces Manila insurgents after the Spanish war victory. He frames government power as derived from the governed.
The document argues against annexing the Philippines and expanding a standing army, warning imperialism erodes republican liberty. It claims expansion demands subjugation of Filipinos and risk of Chinese and Malay labor, while home misery worsens with overseas trade.
