At the Washington YMCA board meeting the annual membership campaign was not yet finished but expected to wrap up within the week. Thirty past contributors remain to pledge and several solicitors are set to report this week. The endowment fund stood at 22720 with a 1187.05 revenue, a solid return amid financial stress.
J B DeWit announces the De Wit Grocery at the south east corner of the square after moving from Sigourney. He credits T Phillips and Tracy for recommending Washington. DeWit was born in Pollu and has worked with Ht J Heimz Co Warfield Howell Des Moines and Sigourney. He and his wife Hatfield from New York have two daughters Helen Mae 11 and Margaret Lois 4. They reside at 821 West Washington Street and attend Presbyterian services.
Assistant Attorney General Walter Maley completed a 56 page bill providing a full state monopoly of liquor control including wholesale and retail operations. A five member commission would run the dispensary system and may open statewide retail stores with local option. Annual license purchase permits would cost one dollar. Delegates debated tax revision alongside the liquor measure as Des Moines news notes indicate cautious House support and possible quick passage within two weeks.
The Iowa Supreme Court affirmed the conspiracy convictions of J. W. Lenker and Paul Moore tied to resisting state cattle tuberculin testing. The Washington Municipal Band announces four Thursday dances over the holidays to raise funds for music and chairs for City Hall. Proceeds buy chairs for public meetings as the main room now lacks suitable seating. Committees include Ray Kupka as chairman, with William Stewart and Cloud Garret. Fifty men will start work Thursday at a quarry on Dan A. Guy’s farm near Sandy Look Corner north of Brighton as part of Washington County civil works. The site, described as accessible with good rock for road surfacing, joins other county quarries boosting the weekly payroll to about five thousand dollars.
