Fire originating in the meat market of H. Krouse at Chelsea Tama county destroyed the buildings and stores of M. Warner J. J. Schaller and H. Wilkinson early this morning. There was little insurance and no loss estimate available.
Dr. Omer Barnes reports his brother Calmer Barnes lost his right foot piloting through White Horse rapids. A rope loop around a post on the boat tightened as the scow neared shore, catching Calmer and amputating below the knee in moments.
Fred A. Maynard formerly Kent county prosecutor and Michigan attorney general was indicted for improper conduct in office. He allegedly drew excess state funds by vouchers for clerks not actually paid, in a case backed by ex-clerks Kuhns and Wykes. Maynard pleaded not guilty and posted bail. Separate items note Yale students boxing in New Haven, Bateman’s shooting in Calumet, and Racine molders' strike settlement efforts.
