Brighton Cut-Off Opens Cutting Distance For Rock Island Line
The Brighton cut-off, under construction over four years with the actual work taking more than two years, opens to through freights yesterday. Passenger service starts next Monday as the old line is abandoned, shortening routes by about seven miles and skipping Brighton and Pleasant Plain. The project raises the Skunk river bridge fourteen feet and uses heavy steel to prevent wrecks, though dirt settlement will continue. Local residents fear a boycott while the railroad adds a plank sidewalk to its new depot, inviting nearby trade.
