Capsul e recovery under way from space as Discoverer XVIII capsule with human and plant life aboard is to be recovered in the Pacific near Hawaii after a 4 pole-to-pole orbit. The 300 pound gold plated capsule carried radiation exposure data to aid future manned spaceflight projects.

Tax Group Seeks Lower State Spending and Tax Relief

The Iowa Taxpayers Association urged reducing the state treasury surplus to a working level and avoiding tax increases. It proposed directing any additional school aid to property tax relief while keeping school control local, and asked local governments to cut spending and use excess funds for temporary relief. It also urged Congress to curb federal spending and eventually cut taxes.

Central Plains braced as storm complex spreads

A storm center moving from the Southwest into the central Plains brings freezing rain and ice across Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas, Colorado, and Missouri. The system caused record snowfalls in New Mexico and Arizona and left deaths blamed on the siege as cold air and snow spread to Indiana and New England.

Iowa man pleads guilty in lonely hearts fraud case

Hilmer Eldon Barnes 49 of Clarinda pleaded guilty in Des Moines federal court to using the mails to defraud in a lonely hearts scheme. He was indicted Nov 3 by a grand jury at Council Bluffs and arrested in Clarinda. Judge Roy L. Stephenson accepted the plea and deferred sentencing until Judge Robert Van Pelt arrives.

Canadians discuss Cuba trade push amid embargo gaps

A 10 man Cuban trade mission split into three groups visiting Montreal Ottawa and Toronto seeking to buy Canadian sugar mill machinery auto parts and other equipment. Mrs. John Hyde Jr. Dies Here Friday

Mrs. John Hyde Jr., 57, of near Brighton died Friday at Washington County Hospital after three weeks of illness. Funeral services were held Sunday at Zehr Funeral Home in Wayland with Rev. E. E. Voss officiating. Burial in Cottonwood Cemetery. Born September 8, 1903 in Lowel she was married January 29, 1931 in Mt. Rioters clashed with French troops as Charles de Gaulle toured Cherchell Infantry School 80 miles from Algiers. NFO Members to Hear Reports December 14

Reports from the national board meeting of the NFO will be shared at the Washington County NFO meeting on December 14 in the Odd Fellows Hall. Des Moines discussed expanding dairy group membership and setting minimum milk prices. Two Survivors Of Airplane Crash In Vermont And New York

Snow Warning in Iowa as Winter Storm Impacts Southwest

Extreme southwest Iowa faces a heavy snow warning tonight and Sunday with four inches or more possible. Snow develops this afternoon in the extreme southwest then spreads west and central tonight and statewide Sunday, with mix of snow sleet or freezing rain in the extreme south tonight. Highs in the 20s, lows 10 to 15 from north to upper 20s south, and colder Monday as snow ends west to east.
