Woodbury supervisors tighten the county fund rules for owners paid when dogs kill domestic animals. The board will reject claims unless a member is notified in time to view the carcass.
Newton L C Quigley 43 of Marshalltown pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three months in jail for forging a $2.50 check after lacking funds to reach Des Moines where his wife lay ill.
Arthur Ebright Jr turned four as flames swept the living room of his parents' Waterloo home causing about 4000 dollars in damage. Firemen saved the day while the boy looked to see Santa downtown, a trip he had hoped for before the fire broke out.
Eugene Ross 82 pleaded guilty to drunkenness before Municipal Judge Harry L. Robertson. He was sentenced to five days in jail to decide whether the friends who gave him the liquor were really friends. Ross, unemployed, was also given two weeks to pay $1.50 costs.
Pocahontas Frederick Whistler a 14 month old son of Mr and Mrs Chester Whistler living nearby suffocated in his bed when burning corn husks toppled from a stove igniting a rug Mrs Whistler had been away from the house and returned to find the child dead.
William Higgins seeks 7000 for injuries after a county truck hit him while working in a county quarry near Farley. A separate suit asks 5155 for Lina county care of insane persons for 22 years, claiming Dubuque county residents.

The Inter-Fraternity Council unanimously dissolved Pan-Hellenic Ltd a former eight fraternity closed group at the University of Iowa. Moments later the group reorganized as the Iowa Men's Pan-Hellenic Association to continue social fraternity cooperation.
Sixteen members of the American Federation of Labor were fined ten dollars each for staging a sit-down strike that blocked about 350 workers at Kohrs Packing and Kohrs Cold Storage. Four Davenport lawyers for the A F L and Kohrs clashed as tensions nearly flared into violence.
Mrs Albert Walton 75 suffered serious injuries after slipping and falling on the porch steps at her Wellman area home Wednesday afternoon.
Nine dead in a Knoxville tenement fire. Six children among the victims died in a condemned fire trap as flames swept through the ramshackle district. Six others injured leaping from the second floor. Fire blamed on overheated stove. rapid collapse left occupants with no escape.
Fire crews responded to a roof fire at 94 West Third Street shortly after 8 20 this morning. A chimney spark started the blaze, confined to a three to four foot square area with water damage to the ceiling. Neighbor Elam Johnson spotted the fire in time to halt its spread.

Mre Ho A Bogel says her brother in law Rev Fred Schwalbe a longtime Alaska missionary drowned last Thursday December 2 when his car went through ice on a pond or river near Bethel Alaska. His body was recovered and funeral services were held Sunday at Bethel He had served thirty years in Alaska and survived by wife Anna Buxbaum Rehmel and two daughters Gertrude and Katherine.
Rev. and Mrs. Frank Monsivait and their six year old son, Panama missionaries, will speak at the Foursquare tabernacle Friday evening. They will show Panama pictures and the boy will sing in Spanish. The group are native Spaniards. All welcome.
Relatives and friends recall Rev Schwalbe and his wife who lived at Beth El. They visited the area in summer 1936 with Mrs Engel, her sister, and other local friends.
Melvin Gingerich, social science instructor at Washington high school and junior college, was granted a semester's leave to pursue a doctorate at the State University of Iowa. He plans to split time between Washington and Iowa City, finishing a thesis on Literary and Religious Forces in American History. Florence Kent of West Union, Iowa, will succeed him beginning late January.
Wade Gardner of Cedar Township was elected president of the Washington County Farm Bureau at its annual meeting in the Methodist church. Officers include Ed Hotle vice president J B Dill secretary Joe Knotek treasurer. The new president was named second alternate voting director to the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation for 1938 with a slate of directors from area townships and organizations. The gathering featured a cooperative noon dinner and introductions by county agent W J Roudabush plus remarks on music study and its value.
Wade Gardner of Cedar township, longtime Farm Bureau leader, was elected president of the Washington County Farm Bureau Federation at yesterday’s annual election.
Washington churches prepare Christmas programs and special music across denominations. United Presbyterian vesper service Dec 19 and a Sabbath school program Dec 23 are noted, with other churches listing Christmas Eve and Dec 25 activities.
Contributions to the Christmas Seal Fund from Washington have topped 200 as of today. Funds benefit the county health unit’s tuberculosis work, with state and federal matches doubling local contributions. Most money stays in Washington County, though some is sent elsewhere and returns to the county. The committee requests all donations by Christmas.
In Washington on December 9, the House defeated by 99 to 98 an amendment by Coffee of Kansas to remove compulsory corn control from the farm bill. The administration overrode the move, preserving quotas despite Coffee warning that retention would cost farmers liberties.
The house parity price bloc declares a nationwide campaign to secure minimum price support for farmers. Led by Rep. Patman of Texas the group claims 109 members and will form county committees in key agricultural states to push parity price goals endorsed by President Roosevelt and Secretary Wallace.
The Washington board of education met with several architects to discuss hiring one to draft plans for a new elementary school to replace the Heights building. No definite hire was made as plans and cost estimates are developed, with another meeting planned before seeking voter approval for a bond issue. The Heights structure, in disrepair, would be replaced at a new location after viewing Iowa school designs for guidance.
