Jepsen Pushes Tax Plan in Iowa Governor Bid

Lt. Gov. Roger Jepsen outlines a sweeping tax reform as he seeks to unseat Gov. Robert D. Ray. The plan calls for a 1 cent sales tax, elimination of personal property tax, and exemptions for low income individuals while restoring food and drug tax exemptions and five year tax relief on land and building improvements. He accuses Ray of delaying the budget and distorting a state deficit.

Washington County Assessor Office Closes for Renovation

The office of Ernie Lund, Washington County assessor, will close Friday December 10 to allow floor renovation in the assessor and staff offices at the courthouse. Washington Junior High Music Department to present its annual Christmas Concert Monday December 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the gym, directed by Mrs. Dean Stanley and featuring seventh to ninth grade choruses and Band A and Band B under Mr. Gary McCurdy. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Car Crash Leaves Driver Facing Pending Charges

Norbert J TeBockhorst of Washington was treated for severe facial lacerations after a one car crash in the 700 block of South Seventh Avenue at 11 15 p m. Teddy TeBockhorst drove the vehicle which struck a utility pole and was totaled. Police said charges against the driver are pending.

Cookies Needed for Red Cross Christmas Drive

The Washington County chapter of the American Red Cross requests 37 dozen cookies by December 15 to meet its goal of 62 dozen for VA Hospital Christmas events in Iowa City. Donors may call the Red Cross office to contribute any amount of individually wrapped cookies.

Muskie to Formally Declare Candidacy Jan 4

Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine said he will announce his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination on January 4. He spoke at a news conference where Senator John V. Tunney of California and California Assembly Speaker Bob Moretti endorsed his candidacy.

Kilmer T Klassen Named U S Postmaster General

Kilmer T. Klassen, 63, of Conway Massachusetts, rises from American Can president to become US postmaster general. At 17 he joined American Can Co as an office boy in 1925 and later led the 750000 employee Postal Service succeeding Winton Blount who left the post to run for the Senate in Alabama.

Indian forces advance after capturing Comilla in East Pakistan

An Indian government spokesman said Pakistani troops began a general withdrawal from East Pakistan borders as Comilla fell without resistance. Indian units reported closeness to Dacca and warned Pakistanis to surrender while naval forces were deployed to block sea escape.

Three gunmen kill soldier in Curragh Belfast home

In Curragh Belfast three masked gunmen burst into a part time soldier’s bedroom and shot him dead. A British soldier was seriously wounded in the Roman Catholic Calls area. Police found a man with chest wounds in the Markets area and treated it as murder. Pvt Dennis Wilson 31 died at the scene. Anthony Nolan 20 of Belfast was found dead with chest wounds. IRA involvement not determined.

U.N. Assembly backs cease-fire call in Indo Pakistan war

The General Assembly voted 104-11 with 10 abstentions urging India and Pakistan to observe a cease-fire and withdraw troops. India indicated it would ignore the resolution, while the U.S. and China supported it, and Britain and France abstained.

Gallagher named Takes liquor post

Rolland Gallagher 56 was named director of Iowa's reorganized Liquor Commission by the advisory council. The Toledo native and Frye Manufacturing credit manager will start Jan 1 at a $22,500 salary. The reform aims to save about 1.5 million annually on a state liquor operation with over 70 million in annual gross sales across 199 stores. Stuart Kirk, council temporary chairman, said Gallagher must be beyond reproach and have wholesale and retail expertise.

Gale winds spark Los Angeles brush fires declare major emergency

Fire Department declared a major emergency as 20 or more brush fires erupted in the Los Angeles Basin. Winds 40 to 60 mph fanned flames, but crews contained all fires before dawn with 110 units active and only a few homes damaged.

Cloudy and cold Iowa forecast with light snow chances

A weather note for Iowa calls for cloudy skies and colder air tonight with light snow or snow flurries possible. Friday remains mostly cloudy with colder central and eastern areas, overnight lows from 5 to 0 degrees in the northwest to mid-20s elsewhere, and southeast at the high end. Thursday highs reach the lower 20s in the northwest to around 90 degrees in the southeast.
