In the House of Lords Admiral of the Fleet Lord Fraser urged burying all atom and hydrogen bombs. He suggested three locations: halfway up Mt Everest the Sahara Desert and Basuto land Africa.
Stevenson urges AFL-CIO delegates to mobilize 16 million members for active political participation. He criticizes Taft Hartley provisions as inequitable, denounces right to work laws, and calls for strengthened labor rights to organize and bargain. He praises Gov. Harriman and the new federation’s potential for peace and national impact.
The zoning board of adjustment will hold its regular meeting Monday December 12 at 7 30 p m in city hall council chamber Chairman L I Norton called attention to the session.
A federal court jury in Keokuk awarded John W Hancock five thousand dollars for injuries from a highway 2 collision east of Washington on January 25 1954. His ambulance was struck by a Rock Island Transit semi trailer while en route to a hospital. Hancock had been injured earlier in a separate oil truck collision near Ainsworth and his suit against Skelly Oil remains pending.
London reports say Prime Minister Anthony Eden will reshuffle his cabinet before a U S trip to meet President Eisenhower. Likely moves involve Chancellor R A Butler and possibly Foreign Minister Harold Macmillan with a rearrangement between Christmas and the New Year.
The Washington County Welfare Office distributed 11 000 pounds of surplus commodities to needy families at the courthouse. Butter cheese dry milk shortening lima beans rice flour and corn meal were included. Recipients totaled 166 families and 46 people, with February planned for the next distribution.
Iowa official Dayton Countryman urged Washington County peace officers to organize a county association to boost efficiency. The plan aims for regular meetings, better liaison with the attorney general, public education, and shared programs. Gifford Morrison presided. Loren Roberson named temporary secretary as the group planned to convene bi monthly.
Five youths were bound over to a grand jury on charges linked to burglaries in five Iowa counties netting about 5000 dollars in loot. A sixth suspect Lance Penney was arrested for withholding information. The group admitted breaking into 35 to 40 locations including Johnson Linn Cedar Benton and Jones counties and discarded much of the loot.
Bert Arnold 5 died at 6 p m Wednesday after a brief illness. He lived much of his life in Washington. Funeral services are set for 10 30 a m Friday Dec 9 at Sherman’s Funeral Home with Dr Walter Scheuermann presiding. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery. He was born in 1889 in Des Moines County, son of Emerson and Eliza (Crammer) Arnold. He was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include three brothers Frank Arnold American Falls Idaho Peter Arnold Thompson Falls Montana and Lester Arnold Denmark Iowa. Nieces and nephews include Charles Miller Sun Valley California Mrs Muriel Frank Waterloo Iowa and Mrs Earl Simmerson Washington. Four brothers and four sisters are deceased.
Members of the Washington County Farm Bureau livestock committee will attend a Friday district meeting in Cedar Rapids to address livestock problems. Topics include park conditions and potential expansion of promotion and marketing research. George Horn chairs with Don Sheetz, Lloyd Duensing, W. L. McGinnis, Wayne Norman, Baxter Freese, and Keith Stewart listed as members.
President Eisenhower met with Secretary of the Treasury George M. Humphrey and Budget Director Rowland R. Hughes at Thurmont to discuss withholding any tax relief proposals from January congressional messages. The group aimed to ensure a balanced budget for the new fiscal year starting July 1, with cabinet members and the National Security Council to follow in Laurel Lodge.

Detroit police report six people including three children died in a house fire in the downriver area. Pleas Griffin Jr and Paulina Harrison perished with Lucille Griffin and their children Geraldine and Dolores. Pleas Griffin survived after escaping to the roof.
George Dewey 57, already sentenced to five years in state prison for embezzling 108000 from an elderly widow, faces a new federal count for illegal interstate transportation of securities worth at least 5000. The charges involve Dewey’s handling of funds and property belonging to Grace Potter Miller of Ackley.
Frank H. Hawkins 57 of Ainsworth died at 5:30 am in Mercy Hospital Iowa City from injuries in a December 1 highway crash south of Ainsworth on Route 218. Funeral set for Dec 10 at the Ainsworth Methodist Church with burial in Ainsworth Cemetery. Survived by mother Lizzie Hawkins and numerous siblings.
Mason City Republican William H. Nicholas, 63, announces his candidacy for the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor in the June 1956 primaries. He cites experience as presiding officer of the 4th General Assembly, a desire to serve a second term, and belief he can help carry the ticket to victory alongside President Eisenhower. Nicholas, a Navy veteran and former Butler County recorder, is married to Viola Folkers and has three children.
Henry Bacher 59 Davenport said the attacker in the November 29 murder of his wife and the beating of him was unbelievably calm. He identified suspects from police files as investigators pursued leads. Mrs Bacher 43 was killed in the drug store they ran.
The Heisman Memorial Trophy was awarded in consecutive years to players from the same colleges twice in history. Yale produced winners Larry Kelley in 1936 and Clinton Frank in 1937, followed by Army with Felix Blanchard in 1945 and Glenn Davis in 1946.
Washington high school chorus directed by Robert Ferrell will perform a Christmas concert Thursday evening in the high school auditorium. The date was previously reported incorrectly yesterday and is now confirmed for December 15.
Cedar Rapids report says Myron Tillman 21 of Oskaloosa admitted ten service station holdups across five Iowa cities with a concealed pipe. He, a University of Iowa sophomore, confessed after questioning, detailing three robberies in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, three in Ottumwa, and one each in Iowa City and Oskaloosa.
In Des Moines five of six detainees from a Tuesday narcotics raid remained jailed for state and federal charges. Four, Ellington, Young, Diggs, and Tolson, pleaded innocent to state illegal possession charges. Diggs bond set at 8,000. others at 5,000. Tolson released after posting. Hearing scheduled Dec 21. Federal cases involve Dorothy Tolson and Raymond Monroe, arraigned under federal narcotics selling charges with bonds of 10,000 and 5,000 respectively.
