Richard Gammon of Ottumwa was sentenced to one year in county jail after pleading guilty to receiving stolen property. District Judge H C Taylor fined him 100 dollars for buying eight tires from two Ottumwa boys. The judge criticized the defendant for encouraging juvenile delinquency. The two youths remain in custody.
Charles City reports farmer Clifford Balsley aged 58 died after falling from a tractor three miles southeast of Orchard. After his car left the road, he sought help from Leland Leach. They struggled to pull the car free with a rubber-tired tractor. Ice caused the wheels to slip. Borrowing a wheel tractor, Balsley stood on the axle and draw bar at the rear. The machine jerked and he fell under a drive wheel as it started. Leach tried to stop it but the wheels slid and pressed him forward.
Fairfield reports the bodies of Mr. and Mrs. I. D. Allison of Libertyville found in water below a bridge three miles south. They were in a truck that crashed through the ice covered bridge Tuesday while en route to Douds for gravel. Authorities theorize the vehicle skidded on the ice.
William Walter Doud, 63, retired railroad baggage man, died from injuries after a car struck him near Blakely corner on Highway 146 while he and his wife were changing a flat tire. L. E. Lemke, local conservation officer, drove the fatal impact as he was blinded by oncoming lights and snow.
DES MOINES The Republican state campaign in Iowa cost 85 800.54 dollars, per State Chairman Willis York to the Secretary of State. The state organization took in 114 3.49 and left 28 882.95 unspent in the regular campaign. The state central committee forwarded 24 975 to national headquarters and held a 3 907.95 balance. Most contributions came through county central committees and clubs and some state employee clubs.
A. J. McKay 58 Rock Island railroad engineer dies from injuries after a October 27 motorcycle collision with a car while returning from work. He lived in Eldon 41 years and was secretary treasurer of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. OTToom Funeral services will be held at Campbell Funeral Home Eldon.

A large force of B 29s attacked Japanese war factories in southern Manchuria and another raid hit Tokyo. Tokyo claimed minor damage and extinguished one fire, while U S reports said 11 B 29s were shot down with four more probably destroyed. Daylight raids targeted Manchuria industrial objectives as Japanese planes attacked Saipan.
No injuries were reported after a collision at the West Main street and Avenue D intersection yesterday evening. Drivers involved were Charles Denison and Max Marble, with both vehicles sustaining considerable damage.

The State’s case against Glenn Wilson ended with a not guilty verdict after a four hour jury deliberation. Wilson faced a manslaughter charge over the 1942 killing of Harry Bolden in Oskaloosa and was previously convicted of murder in that case before appellate reversals and a new trial.
Carris Manufacturing company wins city land purchase north of Milwaukee line for a one story face tile brick plant to start next spring. The firm, active in war contracts, will shift to peacetime work producing formed wire and hardware with expanded employment and a larger permanent payroll.
Santa Claus plans another Washington visit Saturday afternoon following a warm reception on November 24. He will meet children on streets or in stores and asks them to write letters he can collect during the town call. He aims to meet as many youngsters as possible.
Volunteers of America organizers in Washington arranged a tag day for charity on Saturday December 9. Boys and girls will report to the city hall headquarters at nine in the morning where Mrs R M Whitehead will distribute receptacles and tags. Proceeds fund aid for under privileged mothers and children and the annual call supports state efforts to ease hardship.
Allied forces led by Patton's Third Army broke the outer defenses of Saarbrucken from two directions as fighting across the Saar intensified. U S troops crossed the Saar near Saarbrucken with bridgeheads forming NW of the city, while Hodges First Army attacked near the Roer and Duren. Forbach and Wehrden seen as key advances with forces pressing toward the Saar river and Montbronn forest where a five hour battle occurred.
Judge J G Patterson signed an order discharging Co G Schmoeller George F Morrison and R McCutchen as trustees of the Commercial Savings Bank. Sureties on their bonds were released and they were ordered to destroy all old books and records. The trustees' acts were approved. final dividends had been paid and the final report approved.
