Secretary Wilson reports 1912 total farm wealth at 9.63 billion dollars, corn leading with 1.75 billion value and 3.169 billion bushels. Hay, wheat, oats, and potatoes follow in value, while prices for barley oats rye and other crops decline from 1911 levels.
Governor Wilson resumes duties in Hamilton Bermuda announcing plans to present a full message to the New Jersey legislature, which convenes January 7. Congressman W. C. Brown of Kingwood West Virginia lies seriously ill at home with typhoid fever.
Washington reports Capt. A W May testified in the Archbald impeachment trial that he offered to sell the Katydid culm bank to Judge Archbald for one third of its value. May defended his actions amid claims of fake letters and a silent partner contract verified by W I Prior and E J Williams.
Washington reports Joseph E. Ransdell senator elect from Louisiana was chosen president of the national rivers and harbors congress at the closing session. A. Thompson of Indiana was re elected as secretary treasurer and John J. Martin of Missouri as sergeant at arms. An estimated $50,000,000 yearly appropriation for constructive work was discussed as necessary.
Lieutenant Governor Hoss acting for Governor Oddie in Richmond names John B. Thatcher of Tonopah to succeed William Baker as Nevada attorney general. Thatcher and Hoss are Democrats while Oddie is a Republican.
Representative Bartlett led a bid to strike a $2,000 civil service item from the appropriation bill in protest of Taft’s order placing about thirty-six thousand fourth class postmasters in the classified service. The move failed in the House after a heated debate with Mann challenging Democrats to pass it and prove their stance on the spoils system.
New York reports Miss Ethel St. Clair, long time ingenue for Klaw & Erlanger, won a verdict for 22 500 against her former employers. The jury cleared Max D. Steuer of blackmail charges in Erlanger’s answer to the suit.
Snow fell during the night prompting the Juarez track to cancel races in Juarez and El Paso with a new card issued for the event.
Washington reports the war department authorized General Steever to send carbines and ammunition to American ranchers and miners in Hermosillo Durango and Bonora as Mexican rebels raid towns. In Valle de Javo rebels destroyed the town and seized valuables after residents refused to send girls. Reports say rebel bands, including a 1600-strong force under Cheche Campus, moved east of Durango burning buildings. Also New York officers seized opium valued at five to ten thousand dollars in Chinatown.
Murray L. Pennell of Springfield testifies in the McNamara dynamiting case that violent union-busting methods included sending Hockin as an advance agent after failed efforts to unionize Springfield jobs. The government links Pennell's letters to subsequent explosions and $45,000 in damage.
In a Springfield hearing Pennell testifies Hockin failed to appear and was urged to “hope and wait.” McNamara warns about written mail to headquarters and notes Hockin later arrives. An explosion on March 8 caused $45 000 damage. Pennell denies any connection to the unionizing effort.
Mrs. Joseph Lang, who shot and killed Mrs. Mary Copple last Tuesday, was sentenced in Logansport to two to fourteen years in the Indianapolis women's prison and a $25 fine after pleading guilty. She said she hoped her act would serve as a warning to all women who gossip.
In Richmond the governors adjourn after a stormy session. Governor Ble ase faced censure for his lynching remarks while recounting four life threatening letters. The convention approved appointments on farmers credits and a Mann resolution committee.
A storm off the Portuguese coast claims eighty two fishermen's lives. Survivors endure severe privations as bodies wash ashore along the northern coast amid cold winds and rough seas.
Palermo report states Count Pistoia newly elected mayor of San Stefano agrees to learn reading and writing with a tutor hired by the council. The move follows a request from the town council as he begins his term.
