A heavy snowfall of four and a half inches in Washington created widespread problems for residents on Monday. High winds whipped the snow into drifts on highways and streets with wind chills around 40 degrees below zero in exposed areas. Schools were closed but travel was returning to normal as roads were cleared and reopened.
Auditions originally set for Monday were cancelled by snow. They are now moved to Friday December 9 at 7 p.m. in McCleery Auditorium Community Center. Call backs posted at YMCA. Auditions continue Sunday December 11 at 3 p.m. and Monday December 12 at 7 p.m. Dance participants or those who missed prior auditions are welcome on December 11 or 12.
Dolls on display in the National Bank Building will be auctioned December 11 at 2 p.m. Proceeds go to the Washington band uniform fund. TV broadcasts of the dolls air on KTVO TV during the 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts on Thursday or Friday. The bank will open Sunday from 10 a.m. for public viewing before the sale.
Dick Sparrow’s famed 40-horse hitch drew about 2,000 buyers from eight states and Canada. The sale topped $100,000 for 68 horses, wagons, a semi-trailer, harnesses and uniforms. The hitch first drew national notice at a 1972 Milwaukee Fourth of July parade and had not been attempted in the U.S. since 1904 circus shows.
Iowa Beef Processors plans to reopen its Dakota City Nebraska plant after a prolonged nine month strike by Amalgamated Meat Cutters Local 222. The firm will hire non union workers while 1800 workers remain involved in the dispute. Union leader Louie Anderson cautioned of potential tension as the move is viewed as a threat to jobs.
Col. Francis Mulligan a 31 year Iowa National Guard veteran and financial manager was picked to succeed Joseph May as adjutant general. Nominated Monday by the Guard Advisory Council with notice to Gov. Ray Mulligan 55 fulltime officer since 1956 one of seven candidates who were interviewed. Ray had signaled likely acceptance unless the choice drew strong objections.
Washington County Community Action Program requests donations and volunteer time to redecorate its CAP Center at 309 West Second Washington. Funding, wallpaper, paint, flooring, and help are needed in January or February. Other nonprofits may submit needs to the Journal newsroom.
On Monday at 2 30 p m a three vehicle pile up on highway 218 five miles south of Crawfordsville caused heavy property damage but no injuries. Denise Ann Dunn of route 1 Crawfordsville skidded into a bridge while being followed by Larry L Dopkins who turned into the southbound lane and was hit by a semi driven by Bernard George Brase of Muscatine. the truck jackknifed and closed the highway briefly. Dunn car $2000 damage Dopkins car $1000 damage truck $3000 damage bridge $50.
DES MOINES UPI A statewide survey of 661 Iowa Manufacturer’s Association members shows many industries have not reduced natural gas dependence, risking forced cutbacks during energy emergencies. The study by Iowa State University Energy Research Institute estimates energy needs could rise 25.4 percent over the ten years ending 1985.

About 130,000 United Mine Workers miners walk off at midnight in the 10th nationwide strike in 35 years. Union leader Arnold Miller accuses operators of trying to break the union while non union miners continue working. Federal mediator Horvitz plans talks in Washington Thursday and predicts Miller will join. Some Wyoming locals approve a wage raise, while non union mines continue in West Virginia and Utah. Final pay will be issued before Christmas. health and pension funds face funding gaps.
Bitterly cold air moved into Iowa after a storm dumped six to ten inches of snow. Wind chills hit 35 to 55 below zero and more snow was forecast. Farmers faced up to a million acres of unharvested crops worth up to 200 million, with Operation Combine aiding northern Iowa. Two highway deaths occurred, plus three snowmobile and tractor fatalities across the state.
With three departing members, the Washington City Council postponed major moves choosing to await January’s new administration. They swore in two new councilors, approved claims and minutes, and left pay raises, cemetery rates, and employee education benefits for the incoming council to decide. The public works plan includes a northeast storm sewer project, water mains work, and potential traffic lights at several intersections, with a $650,000 general obligation bond proposal drafted by the finance committee to fund sewer construction.
The final paychecks for Thomas Ditzel, who resigned as IPBN executive director in November, are on hold pending an investigation of a discretionary fund. The YWCA public affairs committee hosts an ERA forum Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the YWCA with speaker Jean Lloyd-Jones of Iowa City, recent National Women's Conference delegate. Owen leads the meeting and invites public attendance.
Washington County Public Health Nursing Service plans Tuesday clinic from 1 to 4 PM in the courthouse lower level. Expect higher turnout under Iowa's new mandatory immunization law. vaccines mostly available though oral polio may be short. Fees are 50 cents per dose, waived for those unable to pay. vaccines provided by the state. Children over three months eligible. law requires measles rubella diphtheria polio whooping cough and tetanus shots by the second semester. Some clinics nationwide face vaccine shortages amid funding limits.
