The County Home annual Christmas Party is set for Thursday December 23 at 7 p.m. with the Women of the Moose in charge and volunteers helping. People wishing to donate gifts for residents should deliver them by December 23, or leave them at McDaniel Drug Store beforehand for delivery.
An Iowa Employment Security Commission official will visit Washington on the third Friday of each month starting December 17 at 9 a.m. The sessions run until all applicants are seen and will be held at the CAP Center on West Second Street.
President Nixon declared a policy of absolute neutrality in the India Pakistan conflict. Senate Republican Leader Hugh Scott and Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield said after meeting with the president that the United States must stay physically uninvolved in the fighting.
Rep. Stewart B. McKinney of Connecticut asks UPI and AP to stop using terrorist for IRA members. He cites past calls calling Hungary and Czechoslovakia rebels freedom fighters and warns against parallel labeling.
American Farm Bureau President William J. Kuhfuss urged protective guidelines to balance labor with other sectors. He warned against granting labor a monopoly and argued Congress must protect the public interest, noting the shift from past needs to current imbalance.
Davenport authorities charged Wesley Betts with murder and robbery in the shooting death of 28 year old policeman Michael Farnsworth. Three others Wille Davis Willie Wells and Ornice Lloyd are charged with murder while Davis Wells and Lloyd may be held only as material witnesses. A fifth suspect is being sought as authorities and state troopers continue the investigation.

The conflict follows Yahya Khan’s March move to quell the Bangla Desh movement after East Pakistan’s Awami League win.
The India Pakistan war escalates with 10 million East Pakistan refugees flooding into India. New UN moves aim to bypass the Security Council, seeking a cease fire and troop pullback. The U S and Britain urge peace while both sides claim military gains in East Pakistan and Kashmir.
Six people perished when a Shawnee Road home in Cambria west of Lockport was consumed by fire. Deputies Jerome Kruetzer and Glen Meyers found the two story wood frame building engulfed at about 6 45 a m EST and believed five family members and a visitor were among the dead.
Des Moines with the 64th General Assembly opening in January, lawmakers push for 600 bills drafted by the Legislative Research Bureau led by Serge H. Garrison. Proposals cover beer for 18 year olds, 19 year old majority rights, campaign finance tax check offs, and moving to six highway panel members.
The dollar slid to fresh postwar lows in London Frankfurt and Tokyo as speculative pressure eased after controls by France and Italy. The pound rose to its peak since 1967 devaluation, while the yen strengthened with the dollar buying about 324.8 yen.
Iowa farmers increasingly take non farm work to supplement income with 23 percent in 1969. Nationally two thirds of farmers gain over half their earnings from non farm sources. Farm women join the labor force as male participation slips. Washington County sits at 23 percent average for the state, with several nearby counties ranging from 24 to 36 percent.
Des Moines Iowa Governor Robert D Ray reiterates support for safe driving schools aimed at retraining habitual and drinking drivers. He cites a 100 fewer traffic deaths goal for 1971 versus 1970 and stresses broader programs beyond fines and license penalties to stop the drinking driver nationwide.
