The killer smog in London claimed 66 lives, many elderly, with officials warning the fog and pollution could last two more days. Hospitals issued red alerts while air samples showed pollution twelve times normal. transport slowed and masks flew off shelves as authorities urged indoor precautions.
A two car crash on highway 92 in West Chester at 7 30 this morning caused 750 in damage with no injuries. Joe Henry Nelson 72 of Washington and John Day Myers 24 of Council Bluffs were the drivers. Nelsons car sustained 500 damage while Myers 250.
After the weekly luncheon at Captain's Table Kiwanis toured Paris via color slides by Bob Miller of Crawfordsville. Miller, a former International Lions Club representative, spoke on Paris landmarks and city life. Guests included Bob Anderson and Darrell Limbergh. new members Wayne Davis and Harry Levy were welcomed.
Iowa Southern Utilities Co appeals a district court ruling that struck down a state law allowing private firms to condemn land for transmission lines. Judge Fleck held the law unconstitutional under both state and federal constitutions, saying it permits private use without proving public necessity and that the legislature cannot delegate such power to a commission without a public need finding.
Robert Dischler 24, a service station attendant from Elizabeth New Jersey, sparked a bank robbery chase when he fought the bandits to reclaim his $1600 nest egg intended for an engagement ring and wedding plans. He and bank guard William Petuskey were shot at. the robbers fled as police and the FBI arrived. Dischler retrieved his deposit slip after the escape.
UPI reports 27 IL28 bombers removed from Cuba by Soviet ships Kasimov and Okhotsk after a Cuban crisis. Meanwhile a major storm blast across the East and Midwest drops feet of snow in West Virginia and heavy totals in Pennsylvania Ohio and New York with dangerous driving conditions. President Kennedy expresses full confidence in Adlai Stevenson at the United Nations amid controversy over a magazine piece and Stevenson is set to preside at a Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation dinner. Tass in Moscow alleges intimidation of Stevenson amid calls for peaceful settlement.
Today marks the feast of St. Nicholas, bishop of Myra, remembered for secret gifts to the poor. Legends tie him to Nicaea, Constantinople, and the December 6 memorial, with Dutch settlers later shaping the Santa Claus tradition in New Amsterdam.
Sheriff officers probed a morning break-in at Bud's Cafe run by A G Lease in Crawfordsville. Losses included about 25 dollars in change a few candy bars and ten cases of cigarettes. Entry was via a kitchen window and other night break-ins in nearby towns sparked talk of a single suspect.
Mayor Cloid Willits urged citywide cooperation to keep trash containers covered especially downtown Washington. He warned uncovered containers cause wind and dog-forage scattering trash across streets.

Two consultants from State College of Iowa Cedar Falls visited Washington schools on Wednesday as part of a year long professional visitation program. Dr. Erma Plaehn history specialist and Dr. P Cosota Spanish specialist observed classes in the high school and junior high and Cosota also visited Lincoln and Stewart grade schools. Superintendent Dwight Bode says the consultants observe teaching methods and offer suggestions while discussing problems with instructors and administrators.
Iowa Highway Patrol plans to use unmarked cars in four districts but Washington County sees no immediate changes. Patrolman Lyle Hansen says his auto remains marked and will keep fender lights, while Sheriff Charles Snyder notes plain cars pose no trouble. Safety Commissioner Carl Pesch defends unmarked cars for night arrests and cites majority favorable comments from the public.
Men interested in joining a fox hunt meet at Ainsworth school at 9 30 a m Saturday. The hunt covers sections north and west of Ainsworth. Thirty five hunters participated last week with Duane Lukovsky and Harold Hunter of Columbus Junction credited with bagging two foxes. All hunters are invited to participate.
Fair conditions continue tonight with warmer readings, then a shift to partly cloudy skies Friday. Snow flurries likely mainly northeast and extreme east Friday as temperatures stay in the 20s tonight and swing to the 20s to 30s Friday, followed by a colder Saturday.
