The Junior Chamber of Commerce plans the annual Christmas home decorating contest this month in Washington. Entry blanks will appear soon in the Evening Journal. Two trophies will be awarded for most outstanding display and most original design. Last year's winners were Mr and Mrs W R Miller and Mr and Mrs Bus Westermark.
Notice of the death of Roy Walton of Rodney Iowa has been received by his brother Karl Walton of Riverside California. Walton died while visiting in Pomona California. Funeral services will be held Monday at Rodney. Survivors include three brothers Harry Clifford and John. One daughter also survives.
President Syngman Rhee says he urged President-elect Eisenhower to begin a UN drive to win the Korean War. In an exclusive interview Rhee details a letter with intimate suggestions and notes Eisenhower promised careful study.
Iowa's November rainfall broke a long drought as the state recorded its seventh wettest November in 80 years. The weather bulletin reported 2.9 inches of precip at month end, with significant rain and snow arriving only in the latter half of November.
Des Moines Iowa weather forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and warmer temperatures tonight. Sunday will bring increasing cloudiness with occasional rain Sunday night. Northeast half will be warmer with a low around 24 28 tonight and highs 40 48 north and 48 54 south on Sunday.
President elect Dwight D. Eisenhower announced the USS Helena would stop at Wake Island to pick up key figures for mid Pacific conferences on the Korean situation. He would not leave the ship at Wake, though officials hinted John Foster Dulles might join aboard.
James Hilton, new president of the Town State College, will earn 18500 dollars annually. Dwight G. Rider, president of the State Board of Education, announced the salary decision at a Friday Des Moines meeting. The pay tops all state employees including the governor.
Maxine Crone of Washington high school won the local Speak for Democracy contest sponsored by the Washington Junior Chamber of Commerce. A radio set will be presented during a high school assembly Monday afternoon. The 12 local entries were judged by tape recorded essays. The winner advances to the state contest for a chance at the national competition coordinated by the National Junior Chamber of Commerce with industry groups and education offices backing the program. Crone is active in chorus band student council Y Teens Forensic League Girls Athletic Association and other activities.
President and Mrs. Truman will travel to Independence Missouri for the private funeral of Mrs David W Wallace at age 90. Cause of death is cerebral thrombosis after a long illness and the family requests no flowers. They plan to return to Washington by Tuesday or Wednesday.
The Journal plans improved service for Wayland subscribers with a new carrier. Larry Sinn will start delivering Wayland papers in the evening, picking up from the star route and delivering to homes, replacing the earlier post office pickup.
Washington lodge No. 26 A F and A M invites brethren to past masters night on Tuesday December 9 at 8 pm with third degree work. An oyster supper follows and visiting brothers are welcome.
A Cuban transatlantic airliner Star of the Orient crashed into the sea off Bermuda shortly after takeoff from Kindley Base destined for Havana. Forty one aboard, four rescued, 37 feared dead. Bodies recovered, two survivors burned, search hindered by rough seas.
Plans for the 72nd Ordnance Co annual military ball are finalized. The event occurs December 11 at the Washington armory with reserve members meeting at 7 PM and a nine piece band playing at 9 PM. Free refreshments at intermission. Tickets are one dollar per person.
James M. Delmar of Houston resigns from the Wage Stabilization Board in protest of President Truman's override of the boards soft coal wage ruling. Seven industry members debated action in a secret caucus, with no immediate word on how many will resign.
Gen Douglas MacArthur told a New York dinner crowd he has a clear plan to end the Korean war and is eager to present it to President-elect Eisenhower. He said the plan could be carried out without heavy friendly casualties or raising the risk of a third world war.
Mr and Mrs Don McGillacuddy were notified Thursday evening of the death of her father Earl Yeaman in Williamsburg. He died of a heart attack. The funeral is planned for Sunday afternoon.
Merle Sistern seeks a divorce from Betty Darlene Sistern in district court here. The petition cites their May 11, 1950 marriage and requests a divorce decree and custody of their two minor children, with residency in Brighton.
Eighteen Washington county men bid on a goose at a Townsley Park Fair benefit auction. The goose sold repeatedly, pushing the total to 241 dollars. The bidders and donors plan a goose dinner Saturday night at the Farm Bureau building, with Dave Livingston added for feed at fifteen dollars.
The Ainsworth Parent-Teacher Association will hold a 7 30 p m meeting in the high school gymnasium. Prof Van Dyle of the State University of Iowa will speak. Officials will also discuss football and baseball as part of this previously postponed gathering.
Charles Hotle was elected president at a Friday dinner meeting succeeding Ralph Martin who becomes vice president. Virgil Wittmer was named to fill the unexpired board term while Kenton Mangold is rehired as secretary. The board will change the fiscal year to December 1 to November 30.
In a statement Mr. Hotle, the new president, said officers seek to repeat past year’s goals. He added the group will work to make Washington a better place for business and living, and strive for closer harmony and cooperation among civic and service clubs.
William O Dwyer, former U S ambassador to Mexico, will stay in Mexico as he seeks future work. The Irish immigrant, who rose from a New York City police beat to a senior diplomatic post, packs away his official attire and considers offers in film, business, and cattle raising.
Five brothers and a sister perished in a frame house fire that swept through the Moulis residence just before midnight Friday. Parents and another woman escaped in shock as gas from a nearby car crash exploded. Fire lasted ten minutes. victims identified as David 14 Louise 12 Richard 13 James 10 Gary 6 and Robert 4.
North of Seoul American jet fighters and anti aircraft guns stopped a large Communist night air invasion Friday night as President-elect Eisenhower departed for Guam. Brig Gen William P Nuckols said 11 propeller driven planes were slow and posed no threat to the Seoul airport area, staying about 50 miles away.
Des Moines police arrested 32 year old John Richard Garland after his wife Mamie 43 died from injuries suffered in a beating last September. Garland was indicted on a second degree murder charge and held without bond.
