Washington gas line opens new supply for Iowans

Washington residents gain unlimited natural gas heating as the Texas company completes a new 24 inch line. Joliet ceremony witnessed valve turning by Chicago Mayor Kennelly with officials from Iowa Southern Utilities and the Natural Gas Pipeline Company. Lew Warren Injured in Hunting Mishap

Lew Warren former Washingtonian and publisher of the Oelwein Daily Register was injured while hunting last weekend. He slipped on a muddy embankment, breaking his left leg below the ankle and will stay at home for several days before returning to duties with crutches.

Auto Prices May Go Still Higher

Washington reports the office of price stabilization prepared to authorize automakers to seek further price increases under the Capehart amendment. The move follows an OPS order allowing higher ceilings for thousands of consumer items including clothing meat milk and cosmetics as retail food prices hit a record rise in mid November.

UN Refuses End to Korea Troop Rotation

UN at Panmunjom rejects ending the American troop rotation in Korea and denies withdrawing from coastal islands north of the cease-fire line. The Reds seek to bar UN ships and troops north of the line during a truce and demand a total freeze, including replacements for injured soldiers. Maj. Gen. Howard Turner says the UN will not accept a ban on rotations.

Hugo Lensch at Washington Kiwanis Meeting

Hugo Lensch general manager of the Cargill soybean plant in Washington spoke at the Washington Kiwanis Club noon meeting in the YMCA. He described the plant’s solvent extraction process and noted two million bushels processed annually. Two-fifths are purchased within the trucking area. the rest are shipped by rail. He highlighted U S soybean production growth from 453 000 bushels in 1924 to more than 273 million last year.

UN Planes Push Victories in Korea Air War

UN aircraft destroyed or damaged three Communist jet fighters in rapid dogfights over northwest Korea. The 6th Air Force claimed 22 MiGs destroyed, two probably destroyed, and 29 damaged, with a loss of one plane behind enemy lines. Artillery positions along the western front were hit hard, destroying at least 45 guns and damaging many more. Commander Maj C F Brown praised close support that reduced enemy mortar and artillery fire on UN ground troops.

Two Practice Teachers Lead Farm Discussion

Two high school practice teachers Willys Wunder and Carl Kauffman led a farm discussion on Swine Feeding at the school Wednesday December 5. Dr Catron state college nutritionist presented experiments as the basis for the talk and new material from Dr Catron was distributed. Leaders noted variation in antibiotic quality and vitamins and H-112 on the market. A meeting is planned for December 12 at 7:50 pm with a welding expert to demonstrate proper methods at the Fennliplement store.

Ebner joins Journal Three Quarter Century Club

George Ebner of Tingley, Jons, observed his 75th birthday December 6 and becomes the latest member of the Journal Three Quarter Century club. Born at Ainworth, he lived in Washington county most of his life before moving to Tingley in 1948, spent fifty-five years on the farm, retired in 1942, and attends Haskins Presbyterian church.

Parcell Rites Held for Brighton Resident 72

A A Parcell 72 died at his home two miles west of Brighton after a four month illness. Funeral services are set for Friday at the Brighton Methodist church with Rev I Voss. Burial will be in Brighton cemetery under Omar Hoskins Funeral Home. He was born July 2, 187? in Clay township and married Mary Griffiths October 25, 1905.
