County officials eye 5 percent pay hike plan

Washington County compensation board recommends roughly 5 percent raises for elected officials with the auditor set for an extra 4480. Public hearing set for 7 p.m. Dec 17 at the county courthouse before final Board of Supervisors action. Increase timing July 1, 1976.

Grand jury probes former Iowa liquor commission

A federal grand jury investigates the old Iowa Liquor Control Commission for alleged corruption in liquor distribution. The probe, directed by U S Attorney Allen Danielson and a Kansas City strike force, focuses on relations with out of state distributors from 1965 to 1971. The commission was restructured in 1972 as the Iowa Beer and Liquor Control Department.

St James School Suspends Classes For Holy Day

Washington's St James School will not hold classes Monday in observance of a Catholic holy day. The St James Board of Education voted to resume the former practice of dismissing on holy days, with classes returning to the regular schedule Tuesday.

Bettendorf businessman sues Des Moines Register over defamation

James Howes seeks 20 million dollars in Polk County District Court from the Des Moines Register and Tribune Co. and four staffers. He alleges a December 1973 Sunday Register story about Hynes and Howes, Davenport financial firm dealings, was false and defamatory. The suit targets writer James O Shea, Michael Wagner, Publisher David Kruidenier, and Editor Kenneth MacDonald for 5 million in actual damages and 15 million in punitive damages plus 150,000 special damages. An executive claimed the paper had not been served and rejected the allegations as untrue, noting the article relied on information on file with state and federal agencies.

China to return ashes of U S pilots from Vietnam era

State official blasts Iowa school aid formula

State Superintendent Robert Benton told a legislative study committee that the Iowa school aid formula strains small districts by tying funding to enrollment.
