A man seized for drunk driving in Frankfurt was initially thought to be a masquerade party fugitive. Investigators later determined he was a prison fugitive on a stolen motorcycle.
Mid-Prairie Community School District directors to be elected January 15 1957 in five caucus areas. Meetings set December 10 11 12 13 and 17 at area high schools with old districts nominating candidates. Voters urged to attend, as five directors will serve the new district.
Washington County farmers are urged to study facts on the 1957 corn program as a national referendum on December 11 decides between soil bank base acreage and the traditional allotment plan. Eligible voters include commercial area farmers from 1956 crops with rules for absent ballots and corporate or estate votes.
Farmers invited to Washington High School for an adult farmer evening class meeting at 7 30 p m Thursday. Verne Knecht says Dr Wise Burroughs of Iowa State College discusses test results showing beef cattle gain up 12 percent with 8 percent lower feed costs and slightly higher carcass grade.
The Washington YMCA membership enrollment committee met to outline plans for YMCA Week from January 27 to February 3. Co chairs Paul Shearer and Bill Boshart will lead the effort. Donors giving $40 or more to the Community Chest in Washington qualify for a YMCA membership.
The 80 piece Washington High School Concert Band the 50 piece Junior High School Band and the 40 piece Grade School Band will present their first term concert Thursday at 7 30 p m in the high school gym with Melvin A Hill directing the high and grade school bands William Sander will lead the junior high section The finale features combined bands of 170 musicians performing Christmas selections under Hill Richard Wing a senior will solo Mozart Rondo from Clarinet Concerto Op 17 Richard Boettcher will give program notes Tickets are usable for the concert or single admissions sold at the door.
Washington Kiwanis Club members will sample locally grown tall corn from Washington County in Des Moines to arrange transport to California for Rose Bowl events on New Year’s Day. Don Radda, a Washington farmer, raised the stalks and Governor Hoegh requested their use.
FBI agents were expected to arrest up to 18 persons as federal authorities bolster enforcement of desegregation at Clinton High School in Tennessee. The violence included a dynamite blast at a nearby Oliver Springs tavern and an assault on Rev. Paul Turner who escorted Negro students to the integrated school.
Two year old Douglas Richardson, son of Mr and Mrs Carroll Richardson of route two Keota, was attacked by three dogs on a farm west of Wellman Tuesday afternoon. His grandmother Mrs Homer Brinning arrived in time to drive the dogs away and save him. The three Miller dogs were confined for observation and Douglas is recovering.
In Budapest Soviet tanks and armored cars blocked a second mourning demonstration by Hungarian women. Fewer mourners than Tuesday gathered as they laid flowers at the statue in Petőfi Square amid police wrangling and scattered scuffles. Leaflets urged a major demonstration on St Nicholas Day and a new revolt, but no date was set.
The Washington County Chapter urges residents to donate part of its $500 share toward the American Red Cross national appeal of $5 million. The drive funds a feeding operation in Hungary delivering 200,000 meals daily by January and supports 85,000 Hungarian refugees in Austria plus continued aid for refugees arriving in the United States.
Fathers and sons can join a new YMCA program this week with swim sessions led by Jim Anderson. The weekly Thursday 5:15 to 6:00 p.m. event is open to all ages. members attend free while non members pay 35 cents for the father and 25 cents for the son. Towels may be brought or rented for 10 cents.
Two U S defectors from Korea era, Arlie Pate and Aaron Wilson, crusted by Communist China, left Hong Kong by Northwest Airlines to return to the United States for Christmas. They travel via Formosa and Tokyo and will arrive in Chicago Thursday morning.
Voters in Strawberry Point Iowa rejected a 250000 school bond by 14 votes. This marked the second defeat after a prior failure last year with 435 to 313 in favor. Board member Alwin Zwanziger said the proposal may be submitted again after needed legal steps.
Mrs. Isaac Abbott aged 61 of Conesville died at 10 30 a m in University Hospital Iowa City after a week’s illness. She leaves husband three sons Rex in Des Moines Donald and Harold of Columbus Junction a brother Clarence Worley of Des Moines and two sisters Mrs Miles Butcher West Liberty and Mrs Della Neiheisel Alhambra Calif. Funeral arrangements are pending at Stacy Funeral Home Columbus Junction and she belonged to Grace Evangelical and Reformed Church Conesville and the Royal Neighbors Lodge Columbus Junction.
Citizens' committees compile facts for the Central Area reorganizations across 26 school districts in Washington County. Five committees report on Area and Population, Facilities, Curriculum, Transportation, and Finance. Magnus Ahmling chairs Area and Population with members Cloyece Tinnes and Richard Knupp among others.
Emma Agnes Wright Vincent 95-year-old resident of the United Presbyterian Home in Washington died at 10 45 p m Tuesday after a short illness Funeral services were set for 3 p m Thursday December 6 at Sherman s Funeral Home with Dr E L Haney in charge Burial was in Elm Grove Cemetery She was born November 20 1861 near Keota and lived much of her life in Washington County Surviving are a daughter Mrs Robert D McKee of Oak Park IL a son Homer Vincent near Wellman three grandchildren one great grandson one brother J C Wright Canon City CO two sisters Mrs Alice King U P Home here and Mrs Clara Martin Carlsbad NM A son Charles is deceased.
YMCA offers a semi private swim class each Saturday for beginner pupils in grades from elementary to high school. Dick Thompson says there is still room and provides further details. YMCA tests will run next Saturday for all members with sessions at 9:45 Minnows 10:30 and Fish 11:15.
Bishop Ralph L Hayes approves naming the new St James School hall in Washington as Father Kinnavey Memorial Hall. Rev J E Grubb says the all purpose room kitchen and cafeteria will bear the name to honor Rev Kinnavey a former pastor. A memorial fund committee led by Ray Minick has begun collecting gifts from supporters including non Catholics.
Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y delegates from 40 Iowa high schools will gather in Des Moines for the 1956 Model Legislature. Tom Morrison and Dick Boettcher will attend with Jim Anderson guiding, as Governor-elect Herschel Loveless and state officials participate. The event includes a Friday Governor’s Banquet at the Savery Hotel and public gallery access during sessions.
