George Christiansen 72 a retired farmer and Denmark native died of a heart attack during a card game with friends in an Audubon clubroom He leaves his wife and ten children.
An audience of 1,190 attended Efrem Zimbalist’s violin recital at the Waterloo High School auditorium. The event, under the auspices of the Waterloo Cedar Falls Court of the Catholic Daughters of America, showcased the international violinist.
The Iowa executive council voted to close the Statehouse for six days over the Christmas and New Year period. Offices will be shut Saturday through Monday December 23 to 25 and again December 30 to January 1.
Ames offers for proposed sites for a new 175000 postoffice in the Iowa State college district were opened by Mrs Anna K Share postmaster. The college offered three sites with one expected as an outright grant. Darrell Pearson of Des Moines submitted the only private offer a choice of seven lots priced from 11000 to 12508.
Miss Gladys Robb Brewer of Bartlesville Oklahoma told an Iowa cosmetologists meeting that the mannish type of woman who lights her own cigarette and opens her own door is out. The clinging vine girl is coming back, she said, with girls reverting to sweetness.
Secretary of Agriculture Henry A Wallace told the American Farm Bureau at its 20th annual convention that rising national defense costs threaten the farm program. He warned that heavy demand on the treasury for defense could cripple the present farm benefit payments program.
Business leaders mobilize a fund to raise 1500 dollars for completing equipment for the Troop F armory to be dedicated this month. Two rival teams, led by Lee Holland and Frank Parrish, will solicit contributions and sell 75 cent dedication tickets for an event on December 14 with Governor George A. Wilson and a military program.
Frank J. Buckingham of Kansas City recently returned from the war areas of Europe will address the Washington Chamber of Commerce meeting Thursday evening. The noted speaker will recount his voyage on the Pilsudski and share a first hand war story detailing European miseries under dictatorial rule and the looming battles lines as nations await conflict.
Third grade pupils at Lincoln School completed an Indian culture project. under Miss Landau the class studied Indian lore in reading language math and art. They hosted an Indian party November 28 with songs poems a play and demonstrations then shared with the second graders and plan another educational venture.
The Washington County Farm Bureau will lease rooms above the Washington State bank and plans to move the county agent's office there on January 1. Offices have been in the Lemmon building behind J. E. Lemmey drug store but lack of space hindered work. The new quarters provide more space, with a large room suitable for up to fifty people, eliminating the need to rent court house rooms for meetings.
Washington plans a tree trimming campaign to restore full street lighting on residential blocks. Councilman Will Dupuis announced the program saying cooperation is needed and crews will avoid harming trees while ensuring better illumination.
At last night’s council meeting city assessor Charles E. Lemley resigned due to ill health and A. E. Palmer was elected to serve until a voter election fills the vacancy. Lemley had 18 years in the post, beginning in 1922, with his health forcing departure. The council also approved hourly pay for city laborers.

Sweden partially mobilized its armed forces to reinforce defenses along the Finnish border. Fifteen reserve classes called up with most troops to border areas as Stockholm evacuations and lifted leaves amid a Soviet and Finnish fighting context and neutral stance.
At the Washington city ministerial association meeting Rev I Fredmund of the Baptist church was elected president to succeed Rev Vernon Carter who left for Marion Iowa. Leigh Soule of the Y M C A was re elected secretary and treasurer. The offering of 388 85 at the union Thanksgiving service was given to the Y M C A general fund. A committee was named to study Holy Week observances before Easter.
Walton of Iowa City pleaded not guilty at district court arraignment before Judge P. J. Sievers after a collision on a Riverside bridge. He was remanded on bond, to January term, with license surrender ordered and state motor vehicle suspension to follow. Johnson County officials reported ongoing matters from this morning's docket.
