J W Morton one of the home board members plans to expose a scheme to arrest Marshalltown Soldiers Home commandant J R Ratekin and eight commissioners for alleged pension overcharges. Morton defends the practice as lawful under state and federal rulings while criticizing critics as trying to disrupt the board. A Des Moines meeting with S R Evans and U S Deputy Marshal is noted.

Residents report a string of thefts this fall with culprits taking wood chickens vegetables and other goods. Last night they entered J A Cunningham’s home on East Washington Street through the back porch and helped themselves to milk and food. The writer suggests using large steel traps to cripple the thieves.
Yesterday near the city Mr. Lintz drove a horse team homeward when one horse dropped dead in the harness. As he unhitched the animal the remaining horse bolted, tearing down the road with the rig and causing a troublesome scene for Mr. Lintz.
Guy Carris arrived in the city from Colorado where he has served two years as a general store clerk. He visited his former home in Nira today to reconnect with his roots.
The Princess Theatre London production Saved from the Sea tours America after stops in New York Boston Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Minneapolis. It comes to The Graham next Thursday with seats at 25c 50c and 35c for parquet and dress circle. Cons Milner & Son advertise picture frames and moulding.
Frank Eicher cousin of Attorney Henry Eicher was found unconscious near his father’s house after being called to help his fragile father. He had booted up and stepped outside, was bleeding from the ears and nose, and could not recall the fall. He has since recovered and is up and around.
Washington Lodge No 26 A F and A M reports officers elected last night with Worshipful Master and Senior Warden named. Treasurer and secretary positions await appointment by the Master. deacons and stewards to be named. Trustees listed as J W Coxe A N Aberson and George H Mullen.
Yesterday several members of Company D Infantry National Guard achieved a score in target practice with a notable showing by unit marksmen. The report highlights individual shots and overall unit performance.
Frank Trachta of Montpelier bought Frank Gerot Sr.’s farm south of town paying $300 down on a $2 000 deal and promising $1 700 later. He left to vote before the election and never returned, with no trace found in his old home area, according to Riverside Leader.
Several cases of diphtheria are reported in Washington with one death. The Ainsworth Clipper notes the death in the edit after quoting the local update and adds a contradicted line claiming only three cases and no deaths.

J Godlove the county bridge man fell ill at the Benz House last evening. This morning he had recovered enough to be moved to his Riverside home.

John Stewart reports the delinquent tax list is diminishing as many taxpayers have already paid. The unpaid tally is expected to be smaller this year than in years past. Emma Orth leaves Monday for Davenport. Mrs. Martin Klass and son Max go to Brighton. Two of Lewis Guinns' children are ill with typhoid. John W. Maxwell of Havre is among county visitors. Jean Maston and Rache Montgomery, Brighton teachers, were in the city. The PEBOs met with Mrs. Philo Canfield for a literary program. Mr. and Mrs. A H Wallace returned from their eastern trip looking well.
