Congress considers 15 percent Social Security boost

Washington reports that the House Ways and Means Committee moved a 15 percent across the board Social Security increase toward floor action with Senate pairing possible. Allies raid into Cambodia on border offensive

Allied war planes artillery and troops entered Cambodia pursuing a North Vietnamese battalion that attacked a border town and two U S Green Beret camps killing 25 South Vietnamese. Casualties for the week totaled 39 642 Americans killed 259 828 wounded and 1 359 missing or captured with South Vietnamese losses and Communist deaths also reported. Iowa panel recommends abolishing Highway Commission

A Des Moines legislative subcommittee unanimously proposed dissolving the Iowa Highway Commission and creating a Department of Highways with a four year Director of Highways appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate. The plan affects current Director Joseph R. Coupal Jr and shifts authority away from the five district commissioners toward a professional department. No survivors Plane crashes in sea near Maiquetia

A Air France Boeing 707 with 62 aboard crashed into the Caribbean minutes after takeoff from Maiquetia International Airport.
