Iowa jails fall below standards in state survey
DES MOINES UPI A survey by the State Department of Social Services shows 57 city and town jails in Iowa fail to meet 1965 legislature standards. Chief jail inspector William Swassing said most substandard facilities are in small towns and rarely hold prisoners longer than a few hours. He and assistant Wiley Taylor inspected 161 jails this year with 20 or fewer remaining to be checked. The report also notes county jails in 15 of Iowa's 99 counties were below standard. Swassing emphasized county jails are the priority, and small town jails not used heavily may be upgraded. Common problems include lack of water sanitation and prisoner supervision. No action is likely until a second inspection round next year. Swassing said bigger city jails are generally better off than county facilities. Vermeer named as assistant to Gov elect Ray in Pella. The 48 year old former state representative and farmer will serve as legislative assistant.
