Ice and freezing drizzle swept the upper Midwest with multiple deadly crashes. At least four people died and six were injured as slippery roads gripped northern Iowa southwest Wisconsin southern Minnesota northeast Minnesota and adjacent areas. A Wisconsin victim drowned when a truck slipped into Lake Ashtabula after breaking through ice. State officials warned roads were generally poor with few maintenance routes and cautioned that chains were ineffective amid ongoing precipitation stretching from central Arkansas to the Canadian border.

Fire swept the Supreme Baking Co. building in Des Moines early today as 50 firefighters battled flames. The ten by 260 foot ten story structure collapsed its roof and the second floor caved in while the east wall buckled. The blaze fed on fats stored in the bakery and caused about 200 000 dollars in damage. The firm employs around 10 people and other bakeries offered to supply bread and products.
