Des Moines reports the Internal Revenue Service will notify more than 12,000 Iowa residents who did not file federal income tax returns by March 15. Notices have been mailed to 7,100 delinquents from A to M, with about 6,000 more to follow in coming weeks.
In Council Bluffs the first degree murder trial of Mrs Catherine Johnson opened with photographs a blood stained shirt and a bullet hole hat shown as evidence. Henry Christensen 58 was found dead June 21 in a garage and later at a morgue with his brother Alexander Christensen 60 testifying he saw no one else present.
The will of Flora E. S. Barkley, 81, designates bequests including 500 at Ericson public library where she served as president, 1500 for a memorial scholarship to Cornell College Mount Vernon, and payments to surviving relatives. The scholarship aids worthy students who do not use liquor or tobacco.
Mayor Tom Heaps fined six Boone high school boys 100 dollars each for opening 19 city hydrants as a Halloween prank. Fines suspended on good behavior. Each boy to pay about 10 dollars toward 500000 gallons of water used, due in 90 days.
Frank J. Preston of Davenport drove into a coal wagon on highway 92 west of Washington. The car’s right front fender caught a wagon wheel, wrecking the wagon. The horses were not seriously injured. One fender lamp and parts of the car front were damaged. Coal scattered on the road.
Iowa faced tax complications as workers at the Burlington and Ankeny ordnance plants reach high payrolls. Tax becomes due March 31. six month residency rules and withholding provisions create collection challenges for employees living in other states. Some workers filed affidavits declaring permanent home status to avoid deductions. If workers move, garnishee of salary is possible.
Loyal Alumnus IV grand champion steer of the 42nd international livestock exposition sold for 3.30 a pound at Chicago auction. The Purdue shown crossbred Angus Shorthorn weighed 970 pounds and brought 3201 dollars. Firestone Tire and Rubber bought it. Reserve grand champion T. O. Again Hereford weighed 930 pounds and sold for one dollar per pound to a Chicago nightclub.
President William Green of the AFL said the union would use every resource to defeat the Smith anti strike bill. He called the measure the nation's first move toward totalitarianism.
The federal farm census reports the average U S farm size in 1940 was 174 acres, up from 156.9 acres in 1930, reflecting growth in farm holdings over the decade.
Fire swept two adjacent businesses in Clear Lake causing 50 000 to 75 000 dollars in damage. The L E Bass drug store basement fire spread to Ward furniture and undertaking, with the furniture roof collapsing and stock destroyed. Dr Sidney Brownstone’s upstairs office survived with smoke damage. Mason City fire department sent two trucks to assist.
A bridge under construction over the Connecticut River collapsed today, plunging about 150 feet. At least three workers were killed and six are believed dead. about 20 others were admitted to hospitals for emergency treatment with several in critical condition.

Short horn steers shown by Thomas E. Wilson of Earlham, Iowa, sold to Wilson & Company, Chicago, for the New York Central Railroad at 16.25 per hundredweight, 25 cents below last year.
Percy Grainger, regarded as the leading pianist in Washington, performed at a high school auditorium to a rarely enthusiastic audience. He played Bach, Grieg, Liszt and Brahms with skill, encores included, and the event opened a season of three concert league programs revived after a recent cancellation.
In London the House of Commons defeated rebel Labour proposals to conscript key industries by 336 to 40 as part of the controversy over mobilizing industry for the war effort. A separate vote upheld government power to conscript workers by 320 to 19 amid debate over requisitioning factories. Bevin defended the government while Labour warned of a fascist state at home.

Mrs Rommel formerly Beatrice Benson is a former Washington resident. The Rommels plan a remodel and have not chosen a new name yet. They aim to open in about three weeks.
