Elbert W Decker a farmer two miles north of Rinard Iowa was killed Monday on his farm when his gun discharged as he crawled through a fence during a crow hunt. His wife found his body after he failed to return to the house.
A watchdog at Buffalo Iowa failed to stop burglars who broke into J. M. Mounts store and looted the cash register of fifty dollars before fleeing. The dog was clubbed with an iron bar during the break in and knocked unconscious.
In Marengo the 15 inch snowfall last week boosts hopes for a 1935 growing season ending three years of drought. The storm delivered about 25 inches of precipitation with monthly totals rising to 8% inches, improving subsoil moisture for upcoming plantings as John Oliva notes the record advances to 34 15 16 inches.
William Dolter aged 20 of Imbuque was sentenced to two years in Anamosa for leaving the scene of an accident without aiding the injured. The case stemmed from a Dec 17 1923 collision in which Mary Plein 54 of Dubuque was seriously hurt.
Iowa City residents claim to have seen a large buck about three miles southwest of town on a gravel road. Mr and Mrs Robert Berry of KR R G LC observed the deer emerge from a field near Mose Fountain farm and cross the road before leaping into another field.
The Iowa Board of Assessment and Review ruled that corn hog benefit payments are subject to state income tax. Farmers have received about 50 million dollars and will reach 73 million by February end. The tax starts at one percent per thousand and applies once payments are treated as farm cash income.
The federal government will run an agriculture census for the first and second congressional districts starting January first. Washington will be the headquarters with 159 workers, 24 in Washington county, plus a supervisor and assistant supervisor. The Chamber of Commerce will rent rooms for the offices.
Des Moines reports that grocery stores and meat markets contributed 489,734.48 to the state's 2,618,880.99 sales tax collections for April to July. The board split taxpayers into 12 groups and found food sales narrowly surpassed general merchandise in tax share.
Dr. RR. A. Hender returned Monday night from Des Moines where he spoke before the semi annual meeting of the Chiropractic Society of Iowa, of which he is secretary treasurer. Dr. Walter Gingerich of Kalona, state vice president, attended as both doctors addressed the class preparing for state board examinations.
Santa Monica notes no major sports until Jan 3 when Congress opens. The season murmurs around free tickets and a star roster. Coach Roosevelt has trained three weeks south with key players as he works to curb ego and avoid dissension among players deemed “All American.”
The Noble Iowa youth Donald Rinner received a $300 Thomas A. Wilson scholarship for seven years of 4-H livestock club work. He won top honors at the Washington county fair and placed highly in state fairs and the International show, with Caputo and Rinner taking first and fourth in a barrow class.
Funeral services set for George H. Brinton at L A Jones funeral home with Dr Witzigman taking charge. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery follows a long illness after a stroke. Brinton, born 1862 near Washington, lived on farms then in town, married Ita Taylor in 1887, survived by his widow and two children.
Des Moines reports Dan Turner spent $2,400.80 in his governor campaign with $500 contributed to the state central committee. Lloyd Thurston, congressman from the fifth district, spent $3,476.89, the highest yet reported. The piece also notes family survivors and deceased relatives.
Henry Vollmer told the Washington city council that a car load of brick could be procured at no cost to aid relie f paving on alleys and streets. The plan would re lay worn bricks and add new ones on select areas including South Iowa avenue. Formal action pending, with relief authors to be consulted. Mayor Lytle said crews would clear snow near curbs if thaw allows. A new clerk office counter was installed at city hall.
Captain Ulm and two companions, flying from California to Honolulu, crashed when fuel ran out near the Hawaiian islands. Coast guard search mounted for Ulm, Charles and Leon Shilling, Knagfish men, as Itasca sails to locate the downed seaplane.
Washington endured a frigid night with a low of 14 degrees above zero the coldest so far this winter period. The sharp drop in temperature raised concerns about frost risks and heating demand across the region.
Louise Paul of Wilton Junction Muscatine county Iowa and Leland Monasmith of South Dakota were named the healthiest boy and girl in the nation in the 4-H club contest at the International Livestock Show. They stood among 1,499 participants judged for physical perfection by medical specialists.
