E R Davis age 81 died at his farm home today. He had resided in the county for decades and was known for farming and community involvement. He is survived by relatives and friends in the area. Burial arrangements are pending.
R R Davis 81 of Crawfordsville died at his farm home at 1 45 this morning after illness since October 7. Funeral Thursday at 2 00 at Salem Presbyterian church with Rev Ernest Smith and Duane Meyer officiating. Burial in Cambrian cemetery. He was born December 22 1870 in Elm Grove and married Claudia Kivans January 22 1896. Survived by wife three sons a daughter two brothers one sister eight grandchildren two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He served as school board member township trustee bank director church elder and Sunday school teacher. He was a farmer and member of Modern Woodmen. Burial arrangements by Jones funeral home.

Chicago reporters note judging for the International Live Stock Exhibition nears a climax as thousands wait for the grand champion steer. Exposition manager William K. Ogilvie predicts the largest crowd of the 10 day show which began Saturday. The steer will be sold at auction to the highest bidder. The grand champion barrow in the swine show will be chosen on Wednesday.
Berlin Spencer 60 former Ainsworth resident died Friday in Cedar Rapids and was buried there Monday. Born August 20 1892 in Illinois he came to Iowa with parents as a child and farmed in Ainsworth after marriage. Survivors include his widow two children from a former marriage Reba Schulty Chicago and Kermit Cedar Rapids two brothers Blake Crawfordsville and Melvin California.
Sandra Lynn Cuddy seven year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max Cuddy of Vallejo California died Monday morning after a lingering illness. She was the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Cuddy of Washington and is survived by her parents grandparents and sister Janet.
Davenport City Lines buses were barred from traveling between Davenport and Rock Island amid orders from Rock Island officials. Police halted Davenport routes to stop cross-city service as a three month strike ends in Davenport while other Quad Cities buses remain halted.
Senator Robert A. Taft condemned the selection of Martin P. Durkin as labor secretary calling it an affront to union members who backed Stevenson. He criticized Eisenhower aides for not naming a nonpartisan qualified candidate and noted Durkin’s Democratic and Truman-era ties.
Funeral services for Louis John Beitz of Des Moines were conducted Monday afternoon at Marsh Funeral Home with Rev. Martin Greer officiating. Burial followed in Keota cemetery. Survived by widow Ruth Stewart daughter of A K Stewart and nephew of Warren Stewart of Keota. Beitz aged 66 was a retired merchant marine with forty years in service.
Mr and Mrs Allen Cook of Dixon Iowa are the parents of a baby daughter Lissa Lou born November 14 Mrs Florence Cook of Washington is the new baby's grandmother Mr and Mrs Otho McDonald are an uncle and aunt Mrs McDonald is a sister of Mr Allen Cook
President elect Eisenhower named Martin P. Durkin as secretary of labor, surprising as Durkin is a lifelong Democrat and former Illinois labor director. Sinclair Weeks was named secretary of commerce and Walter Williams undersecretary of commerce, with George M. Humphrey poised for treasury. Durkin aims to ease Taft Hartley tensions and act as peacemaker with organized labor.
Gov William S Beardsley opened budget hearings for the 1955 session with representatives of 11 state departments set to present requests for funds for the two fiscal years starting July 1 1953 The commerce commission leads the schedule and the State Board of Education appears later State Comptroller Glenn D Sarsfield attends and interim committee members may join as desired Senator Colburn warns of potential political shivers as requests include increases of 25 to 50 percent in operating expenses.
Attendance at the Washington County Teachers Institute held in the Washington high school building was nearly 1006, according to county superintendent Lester B. Krabill. Teachers praised the sessions as exceptionally valuable for daily teaching work.
Judge Frank Bechly granted Florence Quinn as widow absolute ownership of one third of all Robert Louis Quinn real estate and one third of rentals since his death free of debts and administration costs. The partition case clarified widow status amid a divorce suit. John C. Owen represented Mrs. Quinn with other heirs aided by L. J. Kehoe and Cahill.

Checks totaling more than 100000 dollars were mailed to Washington county school districts as their share of general and supplemental state aid for the year. The county’s general aid amounted to 96897.38 with Washington Independent receiving 25218.80, while supplemental aid totaled 11587. The funds go to general school district funds to be used for operation not for building or courses.

Gen Hoyt S. Vandenberg told reporters the Air Force has insufficient reserve strength in Korea to wage a war larger than the current conflict. He noted improvement from a year ago but warned expansion would require transferring units from other areas. He cautioned that backing in Korea is inadequate for an enlarged war.
An automob ile accident on Highway 93 in front of the Cole and Widmer sale barn west of Washington about 1 45 p m Monday caused slight damage with no injuries. Flora Belle Williamson of Ottumwa and Robert H Dawson of Sprague Washington drove the colliding cars. Williamson’s vehicle sustained 75 dollars damage and Dawson’s 40 dollars.
