Coroner Sidney Y. Smith confirms Charles Laws Town died of smoke suffocation in a Waterloo boarding house fire. Fire Chief Ray Tiller suspects a cigarette started the blaze. Firemen rescued Perry Sparks, 73, from the next room and broke into Town's room to find the body.
Roy Miller, 45, was killed when a shotgun bullet struck him in the heart during a wolf-hunting visit to neighbor H K Johnston. Mrs Johnston fired as she joined the hunt after becoming excited. sheriff ruled the death accidental.
The National Interfraternity Council has declared hazing a menace to educational welfare and will ban the practice at cooperating institutions. C Woodie Thompson dean of students at the State University of Iowa announced the action in Iowa City.
In Council Bluffs Mayfair tavern raid on Thursday, 57 people were taken into custody for being inmates of a dis orderly house. Forty four failed to appear in court, forfeiting $10 bonds. keeper B R Slate, 52, forfeited a $100 bond. Ten pleaded guilty and were fined $5 plus $3.30 costs. Two requested continuance to Dec 6. Evidence included two blackboards, betting slips and racing forms seized by Lieut H N Mace. seven patrol wagon trips to move defendants to the police station four blocks away.
The senate approved five Iowa flood control projects under a postwar construction bill totaling one billion dollars. Major work includes the Red Rock dam on the Des Moines river southeast of Des Moines with an estimated cost of 15.27 million dollars. Other projects cover Sabula river levee fortification, a Turkey river dike near Elkport, Boyer river levee work near Denison, and raising Nishnabotna river levees below Hamburg to remove sharp bends at a total of about 315 thousand dollars.
ET CLOUD Minn UP Gene Payne 29 reached into a clogged corn hucking machine at St Cloud Products Assn and the machine gripped his left hand and arm. Workers used an acetylene blow torch and other tools to free him. He sustained extensive contusions and was expected to recover quickly.
Attorney L. J. Kehoe announced the Washington County Veterans Service Organization's executive committee members and plans for a later general committee. The group will meet within ten days to set procedures and address veteran needs including employment loans compensation education and other benefits.

Virgil Smith of Washington was taken into custody on the charge of assault and battery involving his wife. He appeared before Justice of the Peace J. B. Bovee for a hearing and was sentenced to 0 days in the county jail.
