Lieut. Col. Courtney P. Young said the Iowa state guard will receive Springfield rifles and bayonets, long sought by officials. Shotguns now used by the unit remain a practical weapon for much duty, but rifles and bayonets are deemed indispensable.
About 250 Italian war prisoners will arrive from Camp Clark Missouri to work in north central Iowa hemp fields this weekend. They will be guarded by 35 guards and two officers and housed at Hardin county fair grounds. Prisoners will toil for mills at Traer Town Falls Hampton and Grundy Center.
Gene Varnes age 17 Missouri Valley High School student died in a collision with a North Western freight train six miles west of Missouri Valley. Conrad Fitch 17, also of Missouri Valley, the driver, was not seriously hurt. The youths had been hunting ducks along the Missouri river and returning home when the headlights failed and the train was not seen.
The Defense Plant Corp announces a $2,525,000 increase in its contract with Grain Processing Corp of Muscatine Iowa to add facilities at a Muscatine county plant.
Rev. Ernest V. Kennan of Baltimore was elected bishop of the Iowa diocese to succeed Retired Rev. Harry S. Longley. Kennan won on the third ballot with 76 of 134 lay delegates and 5 of 25 clergy votes. Rev. Rowland F. Philbrook of Davenport was runner up with 25 lay and six clerical votes.
Judge William W. Scott of Davenport marked the twenty first anniversary of his appointment to the seventh judicial district bench. Funeral services were held in Wellman for Peggy Diane Hill infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Lawrence J Hill of West Chester. Peggy Diane was born Oct 14 1943 and died in Wellman Nov 12 1943. She is survived by her parents two half brothers Larry and Ronnie and a half sister San.
The escort aircraft carrier Liscome Bay was sunk by a submarine near the Gilbert Islands. Captain Irving D. Wiltsie and Rear Admiral Henry M. Mullinnix are listed as missing. This marks the first escort carrier loss and the first U S carrier sunk since October 1942.

The American 34th Infantry Division, first to cross the Atlantic in this war and famed for Hill 609 in Tunisia, is operating in Italy. The unit, originally largely from Iowa, includes the Hawaiian-Japanese contingent that distinguished itself in Italy. It participated in North African landings, faced heavy Tunisian losses, and aided Fondouk Pass before redeeming itself at Hill 609.
