A Frank Petersen farm pump failure is traced to a large bull snake packed in a cylinder that delayed the pumping rod. The repairman first fixed a broken rod, then found the snake on a follow up check. After removing the reptile, the pump again operated normally.
Burlington official E A Star ker of Northwestern Cabinet Co. said plants would not reopen today after pickets warned workers not to return. The two plants have been closed since September 25 due to a labor dispute, despite a prior attempt to resume work on Friday and Saturday.

William Hershman a 7 year old of Malcolm was struck by a car as he crossed Marshalltown road near his home. He suffered severe scalp lacerations and a broken elbow at a local hospital the driver and license number were not identified by his parents who urged reporting the accident to authorities.
The 1941 state corn husking contest will be held near Hartley in O'Brien county. Arthur T. Thompson, associate editor of Wallaces Farmer and Iowa Homestead, announced the event. Local sponsorship comes from the Hartley community club. Three alternate contest fields will be planted in spring. Hartley has hosted the northwest district husking tournament for several years.
Sixty seven parcels with unpaid taxes were sold to private buyers and 30 parcels to the county at a delinquent tax sale this morning. The auction adjourned to January 27 as payments reduce the list. Law requires sale to the county if taxes are unpaid three years and unpurchased in private hands. Owners then have three years to redeem.
A British communique reports 370 killed or seriously injured in German air attacks on Southampton over Saturday and Sunday nights. The blitz, among the most powerful in the series, began near Coventry and overlapped with reports of Italian reverses in Greece.
Indefinite time for the service of Mrs. Anna J Hays as son Roy Hays travels from the southwest to Los Angeles to be informed of his mother's death. Officials expect the service not before Wednesday once word is received.
Two Marion township property owner suits against Washington County were settled out of court today. A. B. Magdefrau and F. H. Magdefrau pursued 2000 dollars for road closure damages, settling for 600 dollars. Harold G. Armstrong and Dr. C. Goldsmith asked 700 dollars, settling for 154 dollars. The agreement keeps the Williams creek bridge standing for use by the involved farmers. The November term jury had been ordered to report, then returned to court at two this afternoon to see if other cases were ready.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mike Hollinger will be held Tuesday at 2 30 PM at JL A Jones Funeral Home with Rev Vernon Carter and Rev Carl Klein officiating. Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery. She died Sunday morning at her home near Washington after a stroke. She was deeply involved in Washington civic life and church work. She leaves husband Mike Hollinger and two children, Evelyn Dea and Oscar Lane, plus a sister, with several extended relatives.
The House accepted seven senate amendments to the Walter-Logan bill expanding court review over semi judicial federal agencies and sent the measure to the White House where President Roosevelt is expected to veto.
Washington County Red Cross reports 2 090 memberships in annual roll call completed Saturday. Roll call chairman Mrs Rose M Reid thanks citizens for cooperation as national defense increases demand on Red Cross services. West Chester 43 members with 2 60 donations. Franklin township schools 45 70 and 92 20 overall 100 percent. Crawford township 17059 includes 21 donated at Thanksgiving service in Crawfordsville.
Emmett C. Clark, 50, a Washington native, died Sunday morning at Iowa Methodist hospital Des Moines after gall stones operation complications. Funeral Tuesday at 2 pm Harbach Des Moines with Masonic services Rev De Loss Marken officiating. Buried in Des Moines cemetery. Survived by wife Benita White and four brothers and five sisters. Clark longtime seed industry figure with Brookings firm George P. Sexauer & Son. Des Moines branch manager.
A special church meeting voted to extend a call to Rev George Kerr to become pastor, succeeding Rev William Nichol who left for Sterling Kansas after three years. Kerr, 33, of Pawnee City Nebraska, has led a seven year ministry and is expected to accept the call after a formal vote planned for Wednesday.
Cadiz Ohio December 2 4 U P four bodies were taken from the wreckage of the Nelms mine tragedy where 31 miners died. The rescue operation continued as authorities reported the latest recoveries today.
Clark L. Carroll of Glenwood and Eunice E. Carroll of Pacific Junction were married on October 7. Eleven days later divorce proceedings were begun, signaling a swift end to the union.
The Martha unit of the Women's Council led the December church service with Rev. C. Breidenthal opening and Mrs. Leonard Wheatley presiding. The program included music, scripture, a three act play Such As I Have directed by Mrs. Charles Doran, and a free will offering.
A dinner meeting of the Chamber of Commerce is set for Thursday at the YMCA with a 6:30 serving time. This will be the first such meeting since June and includes the annual election of directors based on the nominating committee report.
President Roosevelt departs for a seagoing inspection of Panama Canal defenses in the Caribbean. He will board the Tuscaloosa in a Florida port for fleet maneuvers near Culebra Island and calls at Kingston Jamaica, with bases leased from Britain including Port Royal dockyard and an airbase inland from Portland Bight.
A Canadian cold wave will push Iowa temperatures to as low as ten below zero tonight with the northern half hardest hit. Southwest will hit near zero and the southeast around five above. Sioux City Council Bluffs and Mount Ayr high near 32 earlier. Snow measured inch and a half at Mason City.
In Des Moines on December 2 the state commerce commission rejected three railroad petitions to run parallel truck lines. The Minneapolis and St. Louis, Rock Island and Northwestern lines were all denied by a two to one vote.
Keith Norton camped out overnight to secure license No. 1 for his car as 1941 black and white plates went on sale at 8 am in Washington county. By 11 am 87 plates had sold, with Rich and Green among early buyers and others scrambling for top numbers for cars trucks and trailers.
