Last year about 250 dollars came from coupons and was spent well with little criticism. over 300 dollars more is needed to fund baskets.

Celebrating his 85th birthday today, T. B. Innes of East Madison Street is quietly marking the day. A Civil War veteran from Co. F, 11th Indiana Cavalry, he has not been well but is bored and able to be about the house. He has lived in Washington for six years, arriving from Winfield.
Des Moines reports December began with scattered snow across northeast Iowa and light snow along the eastern border counties. Readings dipped to near zero, with sub zero likely in eastern and southern counties tonight. Charles City again logged Iowa’s coldest reading at 2 below, while Dubuque stood at 8 above.
The California Supreme Court weighs whether Warren K Willing and Tuff Mooney, both convicted in the July 28 bombing case, should receive life terms or pardons. Court guidance considers the board’s recommendation and mandatory prison life under state law.
Brighton December 1 A dog bark woke Mr and Mrs Ed Shepherd and their son ax to an overnight fire that burned the south siding and first floor ceiling of their seven room home. The blaze started near a flue, spread through walls and into the attic under a metal roof. Windy conditions hindered firefighting as most furniture was saved though some bedding and other items were destroyed. Loss is not yet estimated and the Shepheds had insurance.
Mayo's new bakery on the square adds a modern oven and crews work to refit the Clark & Enslin space for pastries. They aim to open in the latter part of the week and will issue a formal opening date later. A fox on the highway near here caused injuries when a salesman's car ditched into a ditch. the fox was killed.

McElhinney Endicott Watson Jones honored. Eight of eleven regulars highlighted. Funeral services for Lloyd Cather held at Methodist church with over a thousand in attendance.
Stanley McConnell, a noted Monmouth athlete and campus leader, died from injuries sustained in the Knox-Momouth football game last Thursday. His funeral will be held at the Monmouth chapel tomorrow at 4:20 AM, with services in Ainsworth at 2:00 PM followed by interment beside his sister Virginia, who died in a railway crossing accident in 1988. Born July 24, 1908 in Ainsworth, he moved with his family to Washington in 1922, later earning three letters in football basketball and track and serving as football captain in his senior year. He attended Monmouth University beginning in 1927, was a member of Phi Kappa Pi and the Masonic lodge.
Chicago December 1 a brutal cold wave plunged the Midwest to 18 degrees below zero in Devils Lake North Dakota and sent sub zero temperatures eastward. The Dakotas Minnesota and eastern Wisconsin faced extreme cold with hundreds reported dead from the past week as the coldfront neared Ohio Indiana and Michigan. The Alaska Eagle set a lower North American record at 52 below zero.
Judge D. W. Hamilton excused all members of the November petit jury this afternoon. Jurors were to report again tomorrow, but cases set for trial this week have been continued or delayed due to court proceedings.
Fusion of floral tributes was carried by Wayne, Lyle Schulty, Guy Hoyle, Ted Anderson, Clifford Campbell and Grove Letts. Burial was in Elm Grove cemetery.
The Washington County standard leadership training school opens at five this afternoon with sessions at seven, at five and seven for four days, in the United Presbyterian church. About seventy five people enrolled. textbooks arriving include works by Bruce Curry, Betts and Hawthorne, and Rev Dwight Carman. Credit offered to participants is recognized by the International Council of Religious Education.
Members of the Washington council held their first annual communion breakfast yesterday morning. Muddy roads kept some from attending, but fifty gathered for the mass at eight o'clock at St James church. Father Joseph O'Donnell presided, followed by a breakfast in the K hall. Attorney Paul Toomey of Iowa City spoke, and a memorial service honored deceased members. The group expects to move into permanent quarters, replacing the Knights of Pythias lodge, in about two weeks once the new hall is completed on the east side of the square.
Funeral services for Miss Mary Jessie Phillips who died Sunday afternoon will be held at two o clock Tuesday at the Methodist church. The service will be conducted by Dr W W Bowers of Water loo and the present pastor Dr A W Henke with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. She was born November 21 1896 in Cedar township Washington daughter of James and Bailey Phillips and attended Young America rural grade school and Washington Academy. She was a member of the Methodist church Rebekah lodge and Rural Women. She had been ill since January and bedfast since July 3 at her parents home four miles northwest of Washington. Besides her parents she is survived by two brothers Lloyd B Phillips of West Chester Carl N Phillips northwest of Washington and two sisters Mrs Tressa Johnson of Wellman and Miss Harriet Phillips studying nursing in Burlington hospital. She was fond of her young niece Martha and nephews Keith and Donald.
Dedication of Beloit College’s new 15000? Wright art hall honored the late Professor Theodore Lyman Wright. Representatives from more than a score of colleges and universities attended the ceremony.
Washington December 1 Congress met briefly as policemen faced off with remonstrators outside the Capitol. Tear gas cleared a 10 minute riot while senators were sworn in and committees formed.
Four Iowans died in weekend crashes including Edith Verner 17 of Spencer Curtis Pierce 12 of Clarinda August Jacobs 35 of Burlington and Edgar R Paschke of LeMars. Verner’s fall from a car interior caused fatal neck injury while Pierce died when a wagon was struck by a car. Paschke perished in a ditch rollover and Jacobs succumbed to injuries from two weeks earlier.
