Read Labels Before Buying Lawn Seed

Homeowners should read seed labels to avoid low quality seed. Bargain Kentucky bluegrass at about 50 cents per pound may be only 36 percent pure live seed, with 60 percent purity and 60 percent germination. Iowa law requires accurate labeling and advises choosing fine textured Kentucky bluegrass or creeping red fescue rather than mixes.
