Mrs. John J. Terrell of Long Beach California paid 95 in damages after backing into a small foreign roadster. She heard a crunching noise and said she thought she had run over a cardboard box.
Washington officials expect an official Soviet response to the Western disarmament plan as early as Tuesday or Wednesday. Harold Stassen, the U.S. disarmament adviser, meets with President Eisenhower and Secretary Dulles and plans a Charlottesville wedding before returning to London for further talks. Stassen remains hopeful despite Zorin sharp remarks, while others fear a hardening Soviet line and possible UN General Assembly transfer if talks stall.
Vienna report says Red Hungary ousted two Roman Catholic bishops and banished them to Hejce. Proposals for propaganda trials target Premier Nagy and Cardinal Mindszenty secretary Turesanyi as authorities push counter revolutionary charges amid crackdown. The regime blames the United States as Mindszenty seeks asylum at the US legation.
Washington school board members approved another school bus to relieve crowded routes for the new term. Seven district buses will operate with one from Prairie Flower district. a loan bus will cover until the Ford chassis Wayne body arrives.
Commander E. E. Ward calls an executive meeting of Leon Beatty American Legion post for 7 30 p m Tuesday at the Legion hall city hall. The regular post meeting follows at 8 p m. All past members urged to attend.
United Press survey tracked Memorial Day to Fourth of July travel with 18 traffic deaths and 45 million expected autos over a 78 hour span. Michigan led with three fatalities. California Illinois Indiana Iowa North Carolina and Ohio each reported two deaths.
Washington's Youth Center near the McLellan Store on the east side of the square will be closed tonight. The center normally operates every Saturday from 8 to 11 p.m.
Washington UPI The Agriculture Department announced major changes to the 1958 soil bank conservation reserve to involve whole farm units and more farmers, with greater emphasis on forestry and wildlife. Sign-up for 1958 reserve to open around October, offering cost sharing up to 8 percent and annual per acre rentals for diverted cropland, aiming to boost cropland conservation and reduce crop production.
Sam Cole age 68 arrived at the local police station claiming to be King Cole of the Hobos. He carried a battered suitcase with a scrapbook of newspaper clippings and official papers. he spoke of a life wandering the U S and several countries and his plans to visit Chicago and Washington Indiana and to write books.
The Democratic majorities left Eisenhower with over 100 bills to act on while he planned to work from his office. Republicans split with the administration on the peace time budget foreign aid farm policy and school construction aid. The 1957 Congress adjourned until January 7 with lawmakers already sparring over the record and the president’s agenda.
Officers report many drivers ignore the 60 mph night time limit on Iowa highways. A three hour speed check over two nights found a large number speeding, some up to 82 mph. In Washington area, 37 summonses were issued and 23 warnings given, with additional violators escaping due to busy officers writing tickets.
Dr Joseph A Porcello of Pleasantville N Y threw four rocks at a stained glass window of St Patrick's Cathedral in protest of a church wedding his daughter Claire age 19 to Frank Peters 30. The window was unharmed and the couple wed as scheduled. Porcello pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and was released on parole until a Sept 13 sentencing.
Richard Lanagan, 20, of Sioux City was given an eight year suspended sentence for manslaughter in a two car collision that killed Mildred Kruse of Sioux City five months ago. The case stems from a traffic death involving a Sioux City woman.
An Air Force C124 Globemaster crashed two miles from El Paso International Airport killing at least four and injuring ten. Four bodies were recovered, with one additional missing person later located. Ten survivors escaped uninjured.
Iowa Board of Public Instruction delayed a decision on Sept 20 regarding the proposed Eddyville School District reorganization affecting Monroe Mahaska and Wapello counties. The hearing involved about 70 people as five districts and the Monroe County Board appealed the plan. Officials debated including the nearby $4 million power plant which could lower levies by providing school tax payments.
Five brothers from Cedar Rapids were turned over to juvenile authorities after admitting involvement in at least four burglaries over two years. A 10 year old twins and a 13-year-old were picked up for stealing eight bottles of pop, while a 16-year-old was arrested for rifling the Ellis Park Golf Course pro shop. The 17-year-old was linked to other breakins. They were paroled to their parents and must report to a probation officer.
In Predappio Italy Fascists and Neo-Fascists rioted at Mussolini’s funeral rites. About 600 demonstrators clashed with 150 police at San Cassiano cemetery as Mussolini’s body, hidden 11 years, was handed to his widow Rachele. The protest followed a requiem mass attended by the widow, her son, and Mussolini’s grandson.
Geth man Construction Co of Gladbrook won the Crawfordsville school addition bid at 41 320 dollars. Raymond Plumbing and Heating of Crawfordsville received 5 768 dollars for plumbing and heating work. Nate Moore Wiring Service of Iowa City was awarded 4 260 dollars for electrical work. Construction starts immediately on a 90 by 45 foot wing housing an industrial arts room kitchen facilities and rest rooms at the southeast corner of the main building.
