Redon France UP report says Francois Marchand a 50 year old farmer revived Sunday at his home in St Jeanlaerie after a period of ill health. He regained his strength and plans to resume daily farm duties with family support.
The Reds charged Soviet Zone Germans with using American food aid to smuggle scarce goods from the Russian occupied zone to West Berlin. ADN said butter eggs bread marmalade meat and fruit were moved across sector frontiers to West Berlin. Officials estimated 70 000 East Germans crossed into West Berlin for parcels amid threats of losing jobs and homes.
Eight new vehicles were registered in Washington county during the past week. Names listed include William Marie Sr of Washington with Buick, Hazel Cherryholmes of Crawfordsville with Ford or Chevrolet, Marlin Romoser of Keota with Ford, Strickler Bros. of Kalona with Chevrolet truck, Willard Love of Crawfordsville with Lord Robert Brewer Ford, and K. R. MacDonald of Crawfordville with Ford.
Report from Panmunjom says 150 Americans repatriated today, including 51 airmen and 99 others, the largest single day release since Operation Big Switch began. Authorities estimate up to 500 additional prisoners may be freed as numbers adjust.
Loran Day known as Pee Wee established a new course record at Washington Golf and Country Club Saturday afternoon by completing the course in 46 throws. The wager with Chick Robison challenged him to finish under 53 strokes using a baseball and golf ball. Day, a former all state multi sport athlete from Davenport and Mason City, also played in the Rose Bowl era, but the feat relied on powerful throws and a putter on the greens. He omitted the pitcher position in baseball.
About 50 000 American Legionnaires began the 35th national convention in St Louis Missouri with a 10 hour parade planned despite anticipated bitter floor fights over the Legion stance on national and international issues amid hydrogen bomb developments and UN crises.
Four year old Kenneth Turner son of Creston police chief Wayne Turner was hit in the eye by BB pellets while playing near his home. Hospital reports say the injury could cause loss of sight in both eyes after initial appearances were deceiving.
Attorney General Herbert Brownell Jr. told U P News that he believes more Communists reside in labor unions than in any other sector. He noted no concentration in the clergy and said the Justice Department will cooperate with a congressional panel examining unions. He cited Taft Hartley prosecutions against union leaders for false anti Communist pledges.
In Flint Michigan Operation Tornado drew about 8000 volunteers to rebuild Beecher after the June twister. A two day effort aimed at 7500 workers exceeded expectations with 5000 on site at once and 93 roofs completed on 93 homes with foundations.
The report shows receipts exceeding expenditures with surpluses never dipping below 55 million dollars. In 1952 the surplus reached 97 million dollars, signaling healthy financial results for the railways.
John Edward Burkholder 17 of route one Wellman died when his car left a slight curve south of Wellman at 1 a m. The Wellman sheriff reported he appeared to fall asleep at the wheel. The car owned by Chris Burkholder was demolished and 360 feet from the road. Burial plans were being arranged with Powell funeral home. Survivors include father Chris Burkholder and stepmother Ella Nora Yutey, two brothers Donald Eugene and Dental cob, two sisters Marion Reschly and Mary Jane, plus one half-brother Roger Lee and two step-brothers Ernest and Oliver Yutzy.
In New York a Army civilian clerk with access to defense information admitted holding a Communist Party membership card. Sen. McCarthy said the witness, unnamed, is one of six subpoenas issued to testify before his subcommittee.

Richland mourns Tommy Dagle 41 who died Sunday Aug. 3 at St. Josephs hospital in Sioux City after a brief illness. He was born Dec. 15 1911 in Richland and spent most of his life there. Funeral arrangements are with Maurice Ghould Funeral Home. He served two years in the Asiatic theater in World War II and worked as an A 1 road construction operator. He is survived by his mother four sisters Thelma Ellen Edna and Mrs Vernon Spears of Mishawaka Ind and brother Albert, with his father deceased in 1955.
The Jackson ViLm Beach chamber of commerce voted unanimously for more beautiful women on advertising signs and less sea and sand dunes, signaling a push for updated signage aesthetics.
Mrs. Mary K. Sojka, 84, longtime Washington county resident and last of her family, died at 11 a.m. after a two week illness. She lived nine miles northeast of Washington. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Jones funeral home with Dr. C R Reed presiding and burial in Riverside cemetery. Born Mary Rada in Richmond Iowa April 18 1869, she married George Sojka Feb 6 1890. Survivors include four sons Yara Ray George of Washington and Claude of Riverside, 19 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. one daughter and one son preceded her in death.
Two more lowans were freed Sunday night by Communist forces in Korea, increasing the total released since the exchanges began to 46. The men are M. Sgt. Ray Langfitt of South Clinton and Capt. John Payton Jr. of Burlington. Langfitt’s seven brothers and three sisters plan a large homecoming, with one sister noting their sibling Lyle first learned the news and spread it through the family.
Eight people died in weekend accidents across Iowa including three in a two car crash near Winterset involving Hilton Weidman and his family. Leo Chase died after being struck by a train in Calamus at a grade crossing. Additional deaths and injuries occurred from motorcycle crashes near Lisbon and Storm Lake, and a trailer collision near Tabor.
One hundred and thirty one students registered at St James parochial school as the 1953 54 term began. The opening day saw a gain of several students from last year with students attending classes for a half day.
A fire and explosion in Chicago killed a cobbler named Joseph Lochansky and wrecked the Oakley Community Theater along with six garages nearby. Officials expect damage around $200,000 though final estimates await inspection. Police attributed the blast to gas and ruled out a bomb.

Chicago negotiations continued over a raise matching gains won by Firestone plants.
William D Simkins 71 of 145 Division Street Davenport died at 7 oclock Sunday morning in a Davenport hospital He was born October 8 1882 in Wyoming Illinois and lived in this county most of his life later moving to Davenport He was married to Lucy Murdock January 5 1903 Survivors include two sons Everette and Floyd both of Davenport one daughter Mrs E O Weber of Seattle Washington 12 grandchildren six great grandchildren four brothers and two sisters The funeral was held September 3 at the Ainsworth Methodist Church with burial in Ainsworth Cemetery.

Lowans sweltered in hot sunny weather with no rain in sight and temperatures reaching 92 to 98 degrees. Davenport logged 93, Ottumwa 92, Cedar Rapids 91 with others in the upper 80s as Muscatine and Cedar Rapids hit 100. Muscatine’s hottest day since 1947 led to a weeklong pool reopening due to the heat.
Mrs. Robert Dogg a young farm wife five miles west of Richland and mother of three children was taken to the University hospital at Iowa City Friday as a polio victim. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Glen Hawley of Richland.
Washington residents sweltered as the official weather observer reported 100 degree heat Sunday. Saturday’s high reached 98 degrees with a low of 72 expected Sunday night as hot weather continued.
