Iowa's corn crop advances despite dryness with about half reaching the dent stage in late August. Eastern and southern counties show the poorest prospects, while frost threats remain historically mild. Moisture adequate for corn but pastures and other crops need rain. hog cholera outbreaks rise in central and eastern counties.
The 1307 children in the Washington district age 7 to 21 include 629 boys and 668 girls with 440 boys and 412 girls aged 7 to 16. Enrolment last year was 1257, with 595 boys and 662 girls. Kindergarten 85, elementary 747, high school 425. non residents 154 in high school and 10 in trades. High school per pupil cost 12.55, trades 6.86. Tuition revenue 15 250. Men teachers average 203.96 monthly in high school. women 163.04. Under high school 174.16 for men and 124 for women. Ten men and four percent women employed. District comprises six buildings valued at 479 500. The 8 mill levy raised about 8 million for the school fund. Figures appear in the annual district report to the county and state superintendents.
In Des Moines a lone unmasked bandit robs a Piggly Wiggly store of about $250 after forcing the manager two employees and two customers to kneel behind a counter. Tim Carey identifies the bandit, who previously held him up at another outlet a year earlier. J A Shiner, district manager, signals for help as the suspect pockets yesterday's receipts and departs leisurely.
Director Milburn McKay previews a 30 member high school band building from returning players and new freshmen with junior high experience. The 45 member orchestra plans a public concert in week three after opening to raise funds for instrumental music, as efforts expand in recent years. The band drum painting signals school pride.
Funeral plans underway for Harold Peterson five as truck driven by his father Francis Peterson left the road and overturned. The boy suffered a broken neck and skull fracture after being ejected from the vehicle during the crash in Griswold Indiana. In Iowa a 14 month old girl remains hospitalized after a car rollover near Underwood caught fire, with father Arthur Martin saving the child from flames after a broken steering gear caused the loss of control.
Warren T. McCray, former Indiana governor, was released on parole from the Atlanta federal penitentiary after 3 years 4 months, with rights not restored and parole reporting required. He plans to return to Indiana to rebuild his fortune and regain citizenship after his 1922 conviction for mail fraud.
Thirty members submitted qualifying scores this morning with twenty under 100 for eighteen holes. About fifty men expected. at least three flights of sixteen players each. Medal play governs the event with 72 holes per participant. Drawings for the first match announced Friday. Mr Carter heads the tournament committee. Mr and Mrs E M McGinnis and Jimmie Russell arrived from Des Moines after attending the state fair. Lester McGinnis also returned.
Washington Aug 31 Secretary of War Davis said repair work on flood crevasses in the Mississippi river banks may stop for lack of funds unless Comptroller General McCart reverses his ruling and allows a 2 million dollar transfer from the general rivers and harbors fund. The Mississippi river commission has exhausted its funds and the next 10 million flood control appropriation is not due until July. Davis planned to confer with the Mississippi river commission in St. Louis.
Mrs Frank Haney head of the Washington P T A reports strong enthusiasm and a 300 member base with groups in all grade schools and St James. The organization, 30 years old, aims to connect parents and teachers through monthly meetings and year long programs led by local leaders.
Deputy Sheriff Fred Sweet departed for Minot North Dakota to bring back David I Henderson held there on request of local authorities. Henderson is wanted on a wife desertion charge after leaving his family last spring near Lexington. Mrs Mullin and daughter Mary Alice along with Mary Reed of Walesburg Illinois returned home after visiting Miss Mary Doyen.
Mr and Mrs T J Brady travel to Iowa City to assume ownership of a new local grocery store. The move marks a fresh chapter for the couple and promises to serve the surrounding community with groceries and daily essentials.
