Crawfordsville reports the death of Robert E. Davis and funeral details at Salem Church. Aug 31 items note teachers returning to schools, staff assignments, and local families traveling to Des Moines for the State Fair. General Soukup visits Pine City Minnesota to stay weeks with sister Mary Frolik and relatives. A 12 pound boy born August 23 to Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Seydel. J L Veggy family travel to Julesburg Colorado for three weeks of western visiting. Edith Dautremont spends two weeks vacation from Iowa City. La Verne Knebel marries Ilan Maxwell at St Patrick’s Iowa City. reception at bride’s mother home. 65 guests. The couple to live on a farm at Hinton Iowa where the groom becomes a principal. Monsignor Heer and Rev Dresler visit Riverside and return to Dubuque.
Miss Helen Snelson returned from Chicago last Thursday for Miss Florence Karuse’s wedding and will teach at Clear Lake this year. Miss Norma Reaney leaves for Tipton to be a music instructor. Ainsworth school starts Monday September 6. Visitors include the Stickleys and Trotters from Galveston and Letts, plus piano pupils’ recital drew a large crowd. J B Simpson visits Muscatine. R E McKiernan and family also mentioned.
Iowa State College economist Professor C L Holmes criticizes the McNary Haugen surplus crop export proposal as impractical and unlikely to deter economic difficulties. He argues price fixing fails due to inelastic farm production and urges better farm economics instead.
Attendees at the Hotle reunion at Sunset Park include W. H. Hotle family and others. Visitors from Ottumwa and Moline join gatherings for Dutch Creek Fair and nearby events while several groups attend reunions near Fairfield and Salina. The Ringling Hagenbeck circus visit Ottumwa is noted amid trips to Des Moines for the State Fair.
Des Moines report says 13 year old Emmett Mossman brother of Putt Mossman defeated the titleholder 50 6 to 4 2 in the second round of the Iowa Horseshoe Championship at the state fair. Mossman stands four feet tall and weighs under 100 pounds.
The Columbus Junction fair opens this week and runs through Thursday with a large slate of exhibits. Highlights include farm bureau displays, historical relief, child health clinic, clubs, stock judging, auto and farm machinery shows, plus a doll show with 40 children in business costumes and a Roosevelt pageant. Music by Mt. Pleasant Municipal band, plus a busy race program featuring trotting and pacing events with substantial added money.
Plans completed for the Labor Day celebration in Riverside on Monday September 6 1926 sponsored by St Marys parish. Morning program features Riverside Band an address by William Griffin various musical numbers and dialogues. Afternoon includes readings solos parades and a constitutional convention dialogue plus a cornet solo and piano duets. Nearby notes mention residents and travel to the state fair and church conference attendance.
John Kramer of Oskaloosa suffered bruises and lacerations when his gravel truck turned over twice on primary road No 2, three miles west of Washington. He was taken to Washington county hospital and was later said not to have serious injuries. Police expect charges of reckless driving. The truck, bearing liquor, remained intact, and Kramer may face arrest once he is moved.
Washington county shows 18 baby beef and pig club members and a strong judging team at the 1926 Iowa state fair. Pigs and calves win multiple prizes totaling hundreds of dollars as 1400 to 1500 Iowa farm youths participate in exhibits and demonstrations.
Registrations for the new year continue at the high school and junior high though the fixed period closed last week. At the high school enrollment neared 400 with final numbers likely higher when school opens Monday. Miss Ethel McCreedy reports 200 pupils enrolled at the junior high last week and expects the total to exceed last year’s 225.
Des Moines Iowa August 31 republican candidates and party managers plan the campaign for the November 2 election. Senator David W Stewart Colonel Smith W Brookhart and most GOP incumbents attend. Governor Hammill state officers and state committee members attend at Hotel Savery with events at the state fair.
Funeral services for Enos Ballew a small boy who died Sunday night of lockjaw will be held at 10 o clock tomorrow morning at the Le A Jones funeral home conducted by Rev Mr Jackson pastor of the A M E church Burial will be at Woodlawn cemetery Marshall Gannon and family have returned home from a months automobile trip to Ohio where they visited relatives
A Des Moines statement by BE Meredith challenges Colonel Brookhart over federal reserve board deflation claims. Brookhart's Thursday address at Dutch Creek fair is a highlight with plans for livestock judging, athletic events, a horseshoe tourney, Keota junior band, and speeches by Meredith and Alex Miller. Admission is free, grounds open at seven.
In Mexico City on August 31 the Catholic view of constitutional religious clauses looks bleak as congress nears session. The AP reports that, as of now, lawmakers seem to back General Calles and show little prospect for repeal or amendment of the religious provisions.
