State's OSHA bill may top $53 million mark
Preliminary estimates put the Iowa Regents cost at about 53 million to bring all institutions into compliance with the Iowa occupational safety and health act. University of Iowa would need 25.9 million, Iowa State 19.5 million, Northern Iowa 5.5 million, plus 1.3 million for the School for Deaf and 826 thousand for the Braille and Sight Saving School. Dormitory modifications for about 20 000 students would require 15 million. Richey notes costs exceed current budgets and that guidance on hazard levels and timelines is lacking. He warns complaints could trigger inspections and citations beyond funding. The group continues to pursue compliant changes at a steady pace.
