Two Iowa livestock dealers were sentenced to 15 to 16 months for a massive check kiting scheme. Eldon Viers received four concurrent 30 month terms, Merle Mersman got 15 month concurrent terms, with no fines. The case involved more than 55 million dollars in illicit exchanges across multiple parties.

The House unanimously approved a bill to shield FBI files in criminal trials by requiring witness statements be produced only after direct examination. The Senate adopted the compromise, allowing courts to order production of relevant statements after witness testimony and to strike or declare a mistrial if the government balks.

Wayne Collins 44 of Le Mars died from injuries after a truck overturned on a curve two miles south of Pomeroy Iowa. Collins co owned Gus Tash Foundry Co. and died at Lutheran Hospital Fort Dodge after the Thursday night crash at the Iowa 5 and 17 junction.
Women and girls in YWCA swimming will follow a revised two week schedule from Sept 3 to 13. The pool opens to women 9 to 10 am and to girls 4 to 5 pm. Women may also use the pool 7 30 to 8 30 pm on days when the YMCA pool is available.

James B. Jennings, 32, a recently discharged mail handler, is held on $15,000 bond after a berserk shooting at the U S courthouse lobby in Chicago. He fired six shots, fled to a washroom, where guards returned fire. no injuries reported. A note in his pocket claimed unjust firing from his postal job. Arraigned on firing a deadly weapon in a government building. hearing set Sept. 4.
UAW President Walter Reuther asked President Eisenhower to convene economic advisers and auto executives to discuss a $100 price reduction for 1958. Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler rebutted the approach, while Reuther argued price setting remains management prerogative but union demands must be considered.
Eddie Robinson of Des Moines won the annual Iowa State Fair checker tournament for the second time. Fred Sprain of Ackley took second, Harry Suter of Crawfordsville finished third, and GS Blackburn of Grand Junction placed fourth.
