The first BIE Day in Washington drew 80 teachers from public schools and St James school. Hosts from the Chamber of Commerce guided tours through Evening Journal Curran Co and McCleery Cumming Co. Visitors toured city sights and enjoyed a social at Winga s Cafe.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce breakfast session chaired by Robert Everett discusses future retail promotions. Milt Barker outlines business industry education day results and ideas. Charlie Hotle announces farmer business day on September 19 with Farm Bureau help. Leon Hillman to chair Band Day on October 6 with regional school bands. Merchants urged to display the American flag on Labor Day and other holidays per a prior leaflet. Additional details to follow.
Janet Ross of West Chester won a blue ribbon in the 1956 dress revue at the Des Moines State Fair. Jean Eagle and Linda Gerdes of the Hi Cree 4 H Club also earned blue ribbons for their “Pop on Pop on Apron” demonstration and for their 4 H record books.
A Labor Day potluck will be held at noon at the Washington Golf and Country Club with members asked to bring a meat dish a side dish and their own table service. Mixed golf begins at 2 pm following the meal and the event is led by Dr and Mrs G J Nemmers Mr and Mrs Curtis Wells and Mr and Mrs Bill Shannon.
U S ambassador to Australia Douglas Moffat died unexpectedly of a heart attack at Saint Vincents Hospital in Sydney. He arrived last March to replace Amos Peaslee and had recently toured Papua New Guinea and Brisbane. Cremation planned with ashes to Cold Springs Harbor New York. A memorial service will be held in Canberra and Parliament offered condolences.
Loyd F. Morrison of Grinnell, vice president and director of the Iowa Continental Telephone Co, announces retirement effective Sept. 1 after 42 years in the industry. He began in Oskaloosa in 1914, then joined Washington Iowa Telephone, which became part of Iowa Continental. Morrison moved to Grinnell in 1934. his future plans are undecided.
Britain and France begin assembling a joint expeditionary force on Cyprus to be used if needed in the Suez crisis. Foreign Office says NATO will discuss the Suez situation in Paris with Selwyn Lloyd attending.
The Fern Pastry Shop marks a 12 year anniversary from its Washington start by Mr and Mrs Paul Fern. The shop employs seven regular staff with part time help and is famed for fancy pastries and cake decorating. Mr Fern celebrates 20 years as bakery operator, eight of which were in Tripoli Iowa before Washington.
Washington firefighters battled a blaze in a barn near the old Oscar George place Wednesday afternoon at about 4 pm. The Farmers' Mutual Insurance truck aided the effort but a water shortage hampered suppression. the barn burned to the ground after the fire gained headway. The cause of the blaze was undetermined.
E Ray Bell, chairman of the county ASC committee, reports Washington county Iowa 1956 price support for soybeans at 2.15 per bushel, 11 cents above last year. County rates range 2.12 to 2.16, based on a national average of 2.15.
Washington post office to be closed on Monday September 3 for Labor Day. Lobby remains open for box mail pickups but no city or rural deliveries. City mail collected at 3 p.m. and outgoing mail sent as usual.
A Canadian Pacific DC6B airliner crashed three miles south of Cold Bay Alaska killing 15 of 22 aboard. The Vancouver departure had refueled en route to Tokyo with 14 passengers and crew. Survivors included the captain and navigator and were aided by Navy and Coast Guard units. Weather was poor with one mile visibility and a ceiling of 0 feet.
Freshmen boys interested in Vocational Agriculture attended a meeting at the high school this week. Principal Phieg er outlined courses and extracurriculars while Voc Ag instructor Verne Knecht described the program and the supervised farming plan guiding each student with parental involvement.
The University of Iowa 72 girl bagpipe band, the Highlanders, arrived in Aberdeen Scotland for a repeat performance after the 1952 tour. Sponsors report strong advance ticket sales and expect crowds rivaling the 25 000 seen then.
Washington county farmers with soil bank acreage reserve 1956 agreements received notices from the county ASC outlining new deadlines for compliance and penalties. Non drought areas give until August 31 to dip dise or plow reserve land, while drought areas extend to September 15 with grazing allowed afterward. Violations trigger loss of payments and a statutory civil penalty of 50 percent.
FBI seeks enough evidence to link labor racketeer Johnny Dio to the death of Abraham Telvi, the man who blinded columnist Victor Riesel. U S Attorney Paul Williams says Dio may be the mastermind behind the plot and the FBI will push for proof of direct murder.
Rev. Jay Curry named new Baptist pastor in Washington Iowa succeeding Rev. Earl Longfellow who resigned June 17. Curry arrives from Newell Iowa with wife Mrs. Curry and two children Steven and Janet. He will preach his first sermon Sunday September 2 at the Washington church and join pulpit committee members Lucile Forgey and others in leading church activities.
A $250,000 blaze in Corydon Iowa destroyed the Hy Vee store a locker plant an appliance shop and four apartments along the town square. Firefighters from nearby towns aided as water shortages forced trucked in supply. Cause under investigation authorities said.
