John Ross 61 of McGregor suffered a stroke while preparing horses for threshing and died soon after. In Waterloo, two underage youths were arrested for stealing more than 1000 pounds of iron, admitting the thefts.
Lester Free land 21 of Waterloo told police he was a bridegroom of a few hours and was jailed for driving while intoxicated after his car collided with another vehicle driven by Chester Showers 18 of Duncombe injuring passenger Mrs Grace Balkem Fort Dodge.
On a road project near here 20-year-old James Henry fell from the tractor he drove. The wagon wheels passed over his chest but he spoke to rescuers and sat up. Doctors say he suffered three broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder.
Diphtheria cases climbed to 25 in two Waterloo areas over the last two weeks. Health officer Dr. Richard Driver announced the figure as more than 800 residents were immunized at a temporary clinic in the county relief office.
The Mississippi River is disputed between Iowa and Wisconsin over fishing rights and licensing authority. Each state claims jurisdiction on its side of the original channel, while the federal government says jurisdiction lies along each state's bank. The debate centers on which channel applies after dam–created changes.
Felix Dwyer a 25 year old local insurance salesman was found in a wrecked car on the highway between Muscatine and Davenport in unknown circumstances. He was in critical condition at Muscatine hospital and remained unconscious from head injuries. The duration of exposure and exact cause of the crash are not known.
More than 10,000 Iowa State Fair visitors signed petitions urging President Roosevelt to Save the Circus for America. J. A. Wagner of Des Moines heads the effort, aiming for 60,000 Iowa signatures and a national goal of 5 million.
Perry Iowa. Forest Starling son of W R Vern Starling applies for a federal court permit to attend his father’s funeral. Starling, arrested with his father last May for an elaborate counterfeiting plant on the Starling farm north of Perry, has been held in Polk County jail after waiving his case to the federal grand jury. The elder Starling died at Iowa Methodist Hospital of a brain tumor.
Stanton Mamrel and Lutheran church, a major landmark in southwestern Iowa, was hit by lightning and burned, with estimated losses around 85 thousand dollars. The fire destroyed the building, noted as the town’s oldest and finest structure.
European crisis looms as Iowans receive more liquor licenses. British speed ace Captain George Eyston pilots the 347 mph Thunderbolt on the Bonneville salt flats, though the attempt is not an official record due to a timing device failure. Eyston wears the fresh air mask used for the trial.
Des Moines minister Rev. James T. Nichols told a Washington Christian church audience that fear grips every nation he visited on a two month Mediterranean cruise. He cited wars rumors and Arab Jewish strife in Palestine and noted unrest in Egypt and Italy.

Iowa's occupational tax stamps for selling hard liquor rose to 1 531 proprietors and managers, an increase of over 370 from last year. Revenue from the stamps exceeded 238000, with 135 paid by state liquor stores, while 4000+ stamps issued for beer alone.
Sunday afternoon firefighters were called to Mrs Will Duncan’s East Washington street home where a basement kerosene stove flare in the laundry room sparked a brief blaze that died after one burst. Saturday evening a still alarm reported a car fire on the square’s west side with minor damage.
Judge P. J. Seigers of Newton arrived in Washington for a day of court to sign orders and handle miscellaneous business from the March term. A new Washington County Court term is set to begin two weeks from today with Judge Frank Bechly of Montezuma presiding.

Charles Larks, about 75, was found hanged in a secluded Riverside timber area four miles southeast of Riverside. He had disappeared from Riverside last May, lived poorly, and left no immediate family. The death was ruled a self-inflicted hanging. burial planned in Riverside unless relatives in Pennsylvania request otherwise.
Governor Gordon Browning ordered highway patrol officers to Cleveland Tennessee to guard the Tennessee Electric company property after a dynamite explosion cut power to 13 nearby communities.
Two local boys, Donald Jense aged 8 and David Price aged 13, uncovered a well preserved skeleton near their Fort Dodge home. They found a nearly complete skull and several bones in a bank slope, with a physician stating the remains had been buried for many years.
Chairman Carl Voorhees of the Legion horse and mule department says the Labor Day program will feature an engaging horse show with five saddle horses entered and a mule class. Judges Charles Brown Albert Donovan and Milt Denison are noted horsemen. Ralph Waggoner will judge the pulling contest. Committees prepare Kendrick field for the celebration with daily grounds work and practice time for horse and tractor races. Tables and picnic areas will be available with shade and drinking water. More entries are expected.

In Budapest a bomb near the royal palace followed Admiral Horthy’s return from Germany as Britain warns that European peace depends on Hitler’s response to Czechoslovakia. Hitler inspects fortifications and may reject mediation while Paris Midi cites plans for minority absorption in Czechoslovakia and beyond. The Prague envoy protests a report of an insult to Sudeten leader Henelin.
Supt. K A Ralston announced that except for first three grade readers the textbooks remain the same as last year. New readers for the first three grades are available through school teachers.
Ten Texas fishermen listed as missing after a tropical hurricane swept northeastern Mexico yesterday were sighted marooned but safe on an island off the Mexican coast. A Pan American pilot reported the sighting and said rescue steps were being arranged.
Two Des Moines drivers narrowly escaped injury when their car plowed through a guardrail and struck a large boulder near the University of Iowa west campus. Driver F W Oxberger was hospitalized with a forehead wound and a possible back sprain, while passenger H R Proctor suffered only bruises.
