A 38 member Washington Municipal Band travels to Des Moines for the State Fair with two plaza concerts set for 11:00 to 12:00 and 5:00 to 6:00. The trip features Milburn A. Rural schools in Washington county face closures this year
The Washington county school system will close at least three rural schools due to a state law requiring an average attendance of five pupils. No. 6 and No. 8 in Highland townships and No. 4 in Seventy six township lack enrollment. No. 4 in Highland, closed last year, will reopen. Washington township No. 11 may reopen, while the township east of town remains closed. Most country schools begin the new year September 4, with some opening earlier.
