Charles A. Levine flew from Paris to Croydon England today and plans to depart for New York alone in the Bellanca monoplane Columbia as soon as weather allows. Upon landing he avoided the press and said he is done with French aviators and airfields.

In Iowa City two teens Harry Stagg 22 and Kenneth Cray 17 were treated for serious injuries after a speeding car they rode in overturned near Hills. Stagg suffered a broken pelvis and Cray a deep facial wound costing him an eye. Roy Erwin survived with minor injuries while returning from Lone Tree.
Des Moines hosts Col. Charles A. Lindbergh arriving at 1 45 p m and planning a 2 p m landing at the municipal airport. Thousands gather for Lindbergh day as the Iowa State Fair week opens with parades, speeches and displays by Clarence Chamberlin and Sousa band entries.
The Broadway Limited derailed on the Allegheny grade near Bennimgton Pennsylvania killing both crewmen of the lead engine. The double header train traveling about 35 mph at 3 32 a m toppled, dragged the second engine, threw three sleeping cars off track, and injured numerous passengers on the Chicago to New York run.
Irwin Kirkwood wealthy newspaper publisher and editor of the Kansas City Star died at the United States hotel in Saratoga Springs New York at 3 a m He was in his 49th year born December 8 1878 in Baltimore Md He was son in law of Willam Rockhill Nelson and married Laura Nelson in 1910 He became editor and general director of the Star in 1915 The couple had no children and Mrs Kirkwood died last year He had arrived in Saratoga Springs a week earlier in apparently good health but suffered internal hemorrhages and died early today.
Iowa American Legion officials plan a statewide effort to mobilize every eligible voter in the next general election. The state executive committee approved a broad program including a statewide membership drive and preparations for a history of Iowa’s delegation in France. Frank Miles and George Perley were reappointed as editor and business manager of the Iowa Legionaire respectively.
The fourth annual Dutch Creek fair on the Washington Richland road near Dutch Creek opens with a morning of sports and exhibits. Congressman W F P Kopp of Mt Pleasant will speak at two o clock after a Washington band concert. Evening features chicken supper style show road to the city play and Washington band concerts with cash prizes for best chickens, colts, fruits vegetables grains and seeds.
Pupils in sixth seventh and eighth grades will join the junior high school this year and register Thursday or Friday September 1 and 4. Principal Miss Ethel McCreedy says about 250 students are expected and locker keys will be distributed at registration.

Sixty one men and two officers of Troop D Fifth Cavalry arrived home at midnight from a camp near Port Riley Kansas. Captain Jail praised the unit’s fine cavalry horses secured from Fort Riley and noted ideal wide open spaces for maneuvering despite poor accommodations and rain. The troop, first year at this type camp, had the largest turnout in the regiment with 61 of 64 present. Indisposition from water and rain marked the journey but the men returned in good order and benefited from the experience.

Boston August 29 Joe Lansen an undertaker in the north end locked the ashes of Nicola Sacco and Bartholomeo Vanzetti in his safe and said they would not be released until his bid of seven hundred dollars is paid It was planned to ship the ashes to New York this afternoon.
Today Washington High School saw a large share of seniors enroll for the upcoming school year starting next Monday. Freshmen registered last Friday and Saturday totaling 96 with 49 girls and 47 boys. Tomorrow juniors register and Wednesday sophomores. More freshman boys than girls are expected, and the class is likely to top 100, with eight from St James School among other country students.
