In Washington the polio scare prompts calls to close public schools. Superintendent M M Schell says schools stay open after consultations with physicians and officials. Doctors concur that attending class is safer than home play and compare risks to ordinary traffic danger.
Three marriage licenses were issued at the court house. Richard Lee Holmes of Crawfordsville and Marsha Ann Bailey of Washington received one license along with Orlin Daniel Reschly of Crawfordsville and Wilda Jean Chorpening of Wellman. A third license went to Warren E. Stewart and Betty Jane Sojka, both of Washington.
Pittsburgh based United Steelworkers and U S Steel Corp report an interim deal giving 14 000 salaried clerical workers pay rises from 24 to 66 dollars monthly. The pact covers all plants except the Tennessee Coal and Iron Division and mirrors the wage earners contract pattern.
Mrs J M Vinney learned from Stafford Kansas of the death of Mrs Sam Wallace a cousin of Mrs Finney. She had lived in Washington for years and was formerly Nellie Anderson. She died at her daughter Mrs Rev B Strohm’s home in Brownsville Pa on August 24 with burial set for August 29 in Stratford Kansas.
Hadley Waltman displayed a large badger weighing 22 pounds shot by his dogs near his home in the White Oak school district southwest of Washington. The animal had treed after being frightened by the dogs and was said to have fed on a raccoon prior to the capture.
Springfield Illinois Mrs Emma Faith sues her husband Glen Faith for divorce alleging his infidelity. The complaint seeks dissolution of their marriage and related relief.
The CIO United Rubber Workers planned to withdraw picket lines at nine B I Goodrich Rubber Co. plants ending an 18 000 worker strike that began 11 days ago. The agreement provides a 10 cent per hour wage increase and triple time for holidays. Ratification by a majority in at least five locals is expected before official end.
A 15 year old Milwaukee boy admitted stealing a car and was captured after a county and state patrol chase. He fled on foot into a corn field before being stopped while attempting to ride on Highway 6 near Des Moines. The youth is held in county jail. The suspect is said to be the son of a wealthy Milwaukee woman.
Farmers can help assure good legume pasture for next year by safeguarding the new seeding this fall. The first step is to remove grazing stock early in September to allow one month of unhampered growth to harden off for winter.
Nine year old Wells Chapin wrote to Sen Estes Kefauver asking for a Daniel Boone cap. A package arrived at the Chapin home containing the famous coon skin cap from the senator.

Certificates of attendance will be issued by Iowa State College engineering extension services.
Iowa highway patrolman Tom Simpson spoke at the Washington Kiwanis Club meeting at noon on Wednesday. He highlighted highway safety and cited drunken and reckless driving as common patrol concerns. He answered questions from attendees after the talk.
Adlai Stevenson intensifies campaign in New York with three speeches and meetings with party officials labor and minority leaders. He clashes with Dwight D. Eisenhower after a sharp dig in New Jersey as he plans Labor Day Detroit speech and a broad East coast push.
Democrats charged the Iowa State Fair Board with maneuvering them out of exhibit space. Frank Moorhead said Polk County Young Republicans were allowed to set up outside the Varied Industries Building and a worker urged support for Eisenhower. Fair Board secretary L B Cunningham said the ruling covers only space in the Varied Industries Building.
Washington county farmers add several honors at the Des Moines Iowa State Fair. Knotek Brothers Riverside take second in junior spring gift Duroc while placing seventh overall. J H Jones shows in Tamworths with third and ninth in junior spring gifts and reserves Bonnie Novel Guernseys son. Kalona’s Ralph Troyer earns fourth and fifth in senior spring boar Chester White swine.
Mrs John Elliott Jr of Ainsworth suffers polio and is confined at home with cramps and leg stiffness easing with hot packs. She is Marilyn Murphy daughter of George and Mrs Murphy of Haskins and is under a doctor’s care as Ainsworth closes schools until September and church services are canceled.
Wisconsin Senate hopeful Leonard Schmitt hosts a long talkathon in Milwaukee to unseat Senator Joe McCarthy in the Sept. 9 Republican primary. McCarthy, briefly in Milwaukee to discuss renomination plans, has been ill and canceled other campaign events.
New York Republicans led by Russel Sprague and William Pfeiffer assured Eisenhower of strong support to wage a hard hitting campaign in New York. Pfeiffer saw good chances to carry both the metropolitan area and upstate and noted AFL craft unions backing the nominee. Eisenhower planned talks with railroad unions led by D. B. Robertson and George Leighty.

Value Of a Life and So That They May Walk run 13 and 10 minutes with one in color and feature the polio treatment method and the nurses’ work. A U S Air Force Operation Pilgrim ferried thousands of Moslem pilgrims from Beirut to Jiddah for the Mecca pilgrimage. Over 100,000 worshippers arrived, with praise from Beirut papers and links to broader U S aid stories in India and Iraq.
A federal judge charged the Justice Department sought to hinder and then stop a grand jury probe into St. Louis tax scandals. Judge George H. Moore cited statements by U S attorney Drake Watson before his death. The House panel heard that Ellis N. Slack, acting A G, pressed to derail the inquiry and called the early grand jury report a whitewash. Slack denied tampering. The grand jury, urged by Moore, reopened and indicted several figures, including James P. Finnegan.
Dr Evert L Haney pastor of the United Presbyterian church will return to duties Sunday August 31 after previously announcing a September first return. He had said he would be back on that date.
Mrs. Kenneth Patterson of Washington was taken to University hospital Wednesday evening and is believed to be suffering from polio. Spinal tests at the local hospital and at Iowa City were inconclusive, but other symptoms indicate she may have polio. Her condition today is not serious.

Lows 57 to 63 southwest, 64 to 68 southeast. Highs 75 to 80 in northwest and north central, near 90 in extreme southeast.
